Three More To Come In?
Sunday, 3rd Aug 2014 09:48 by Planet Swans (Follow us on Twitter @swansnews)

There are less than two weeks until the season opener and Swans boss Garry Monk admits that he would like two or three more signings before the season starts although he accepts that it will need to be the right players and not just any players.

There can be a tendency as the transfer window wears on to sign players almost for the sake of it because you can rather than anyone who actually adds much value for that and - in fairness - the Swans have got previous for getting people to scratch their heads and wonder why.

I still think we have done some good business this season with the additions of some of our attacking options but you would assume that being managed by a defender we could well be in the position to see some extra options being added at the defensive side of the team ahead of the season starting.

We have lost Michel Vorm and Ben Davies in the last couple of weeks although obviously Vorm has been replaced by Fabianski who arrived right at the beginning of the summer as our first signing.

It does seem to be the defensive options where we need boosting and particularly in the full back positions where I suspect we would all like to see extra challenges for positions with both Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor appearing to be the only solid options we have for either position?

Add to that a desire for a defensive midfielder to challenge Leon Britton for his place when the legend is fit again and that could be the three positions that Monk is talking about wanting to get new players in.

“I want competition everywhere and two or three signings will be great for me - but that's dictated to by budgets so we'll see.

“I hope we can get it done before Old Trafford but I won't rush it and bring someone in for the sake of it, it has to be the right person. That's something I'm conscious of, the people we've brought in have been brought in for a reason and it will be the same for everyone.”

As we enter our fourth Premier League season I think it is only fair to start anticipating that we have options ion more places and we can certainly say up front that we have a much deeper squad than we had last season with options in just about every position to cover injuries and suspension.

Given what I mentioned above those options are not the same in defence and that is where the work is needed to be done. And it was interesting to see that today's papers were linking us with a move for Adam Matthews who would certainly fit the bill on this occasion in giving us more options in defence. And at the price it also should fit the budget.

A busy two weeks lie ahead for the manager?
