Monk - We Should Have Had More

Garry Monk took his players on the first step of what we all hope will be another Capital One Cup triumph last night and declared after the game that the result should have been more comfortable than it was.

A single strike from Bafetimbi Gomis proved enough to send the Swans into Round Three on a night when the manager made ten changes to the starting line up compared to the one that featured against Burnley last Saturday.

Only Saturday's goalscorer Nathan Dyer survived the changes and he captained the side last night with an untested line up that included the likes of Josh Sheehan and Jazz Richards within the starting XI.

And Monk believed that the number of changes and the positive result means that his squad has some strength in depth and he was also delighted that the result maintained their perfect start to the season as they equalled their start of two years ago with three successive wins at the front end of the campaign.

If that could become four at the weekend they will head into the international break on the back of a brilliant two weeks and also maintaining their top four position in the league.

“I believe in the players that we have here. Everyone is in it together, and the whole squad can compete for a first-team place.

“We spoke after the Burnley game about needing to make sure we controlled the game by passing the ball well.

“In the second-half, I think we did that extremely well and should have added one or two more goals to make it more comfortable.

“But all in all, we did very well, were very professional and the 1-0 win takes us into the next round.”

The Swans will find out their third round opponents after this evening's ties with the game being due to be played week commencing 22nd September
