Gylfi Loving Swansea Life

It must be great to be a midfield playmaker and find that you have two top quality wingers to play alongside you in Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge.

It is easy to realise why Gylfi Sigurdsson returned to Swansea after a disappointing two years at Tottenham where he never really settled into the squad in the same way he did at Swansea in his loan spell and certainly not in the way he has in his three league games back at the club.

The Swans have scored six league goals in that time, Gylfi has scored one of them and assisted on four of the remaining five and was heavily involved in the one that he did not assist in - providing the cross that was cleared for Routledge's wonder goal yesterday afternoon.

Sigurdsson's two assists yesterday were a joy to watch as he played some intricate football in midfield before making the killer pass for Dyer's first and the touch he had for the second was simple, perfect and the sign of a quality player who we have already declared will be one of the signings of the summer.

Looking at his passing map for yesterday's game below you can see just what impact Gylfi had on the game with the two assists, one more key pass and very few failed passes. Interestingly the map also shows he combines much more with Nathan than he does with Wayne but that was probably reflective of the game yesterday where more action seemed to happen on our right than our left.

We may never know what we paid for Gylfi back in the summer due to the complexities and confidential agreements with Spurs but whatever it was is already appearing to be worth it with Gylfi fast pushing himself into 'great' status for Swansea and a more than able replacement for Michu. If not even an upgrade?

“The wingers make some great movement, which makes it easy for us midfielders to pick them out. " said Gylfi

“As you saw today, Nathan finished two of the chances very well and Wayne got one as well.

“Wayne’s goal is up there with the best. Most people would’ve taken a touch there, but he somehow jumped up and got some power behind it. It was a fantastic goal.

“Overall, the boys are doing well. And it’s our job to create or score goals, as well defend and keep clean sheets.”
