Bony Duty Gives Gomis Chance?
Sunday, 7th Sep 2014 10:21 by Planet Swans (Follow us on Twitter @swansnews)

Bafetimbi Gomis may fancy his chances of a first Swansea league start next weekend thanks to the international duty of Wilfried Bony this week.

Bony is with the Ivory Coast squad as they begin their qualifying campaign for the African Cup of Nations. They beat Sierra Leone 2-1 yesterday and face Cameroon on Wednesday in their second game as they look to progress through to the next round of the competition.

Bony will return to this country on Thursday but with the Swans facing a massive game against Chelsea on Saturday there is the chance that Bony could find himself on the bench for the first time in the league this season giving Gomis a chance to start.

Gomis - who signed for the Swans back in he summer - has started just one of the Swans four games this season where he scored the only goal of the game against Rotherham in the Capital One Cup but so far he has had to be content with a place on the bench in the league as Garry Monk has picked an unchanged side for the three league games to date.

Saturday sees the Swans go head to head with Chelsea as the only two sides in the division with a 100% record at the start of the season and with the players needing to be fresh for their toughest start to date that could be enough to persuade the manager to give Gomis a run out.

The Swans held onto Bony in the recent transfer window when many expected him to move on and there is a school of thought that suggested that the signing of Gomis was to prepare the club for the loss of their record signing and last season's top scorer.

I can definitely see Gomis starting next weekend as one of minimal changes for the Swans as they look to extend their incredible run against the odds at the home of the title favourites. There have been glimpses of Gomis in the games that he has played to tell us that we have a very good alternative to Wilf on our books. His pace could also come in handy in a game where we will be under pressure and that could provide a good relief when we need it.

Bony's trip back from international duty is not necessarily that long of a flight but it is long enough to suggest that the trip may have taken some out of him and with Southampton and Everton at home to follow Chelsea it seems to make sense to give him a slight extended break in what is very much a squad game for clubs at our level.

And if it happens then I have every faith that Bafe will step up to the mark and not let us down.

Who will start up front against Chelsea?
