Monk Proud Of Swans Performance

Garry Monk was a proud man when he looked back on their demolition of Tranmere in the FA Cup this afternoon.

Games against lower league opposition are always potential banana skins for Premier League sides but the Swans came through with a 6-2 scoreline and never really looking overly threatened by Tranmere.

Monk would also have been delighted as he made nine changes from the side that started at QPR on New Years Day with just two goal Bafetimbi Gomis and Nathan Dyer surviving to start in the cup tie.

“Potentially this was a difficult tie. Their crowd were ready to back them, the pitch wasn’t great, but we played some really good football and scored some good goals,” Monk said.

“It was a confident display I thought.

“There were a lot of players out there who probably haven’t had the minutes they have wanted so far this year but their attitude was spot on. I was very proud of their performance.

“We controlled the game and played some excellent one and two-touch football.”

The only downside was the sloppy defensive play that saw the home side grab two goals in the second half but with a defence that will bear little resemblance from the one that will face West Ham next week then it is probably not a huge concern after the game.

Monk certainly has his sights set on a cup run with the Swans league position being exceptionally strong and he will watch the 4th Round draw with interest when it is made on Monday to see who his side will be pitted against next

“The cup is important to me. It can be special to go on a cup run and that’s what we’re looking to do,” he said.

“I think you could see what it meant from the way we played today.”
