Williams Hails Swans Defence

Ashley Williams was rightfully a happy captain after his performance in the Swans 1-0 win at Southampton earned him the man of the match performance.

Williams was the rock at the centre of the Swans defence on an afternoon when the two goalkeepers with the most clean sheets in the league this season went head to head.

And it was Lucasz Fabianski who added to his tally for the season with additional thanks to the defenders who were so solid in front of him with Williams and Fernandez showing exactly what they are capable of as the Swans put some disappointing recent performances behind them.

Having got over the shock of conceding five to Chelsea in their last league outing, the Swans could not have been more solid this time around as the Saints went in search - ultimately in vain - of the win that they needed to lift themselves back above Man Utd and into 3rd place in the table.

"For the full 90 I think the team worked so hard to get that clean sheet," Williams told Sky Sports 1.

"Jonjo took the geezer on and it's a brilliant strike so it's perfect. As a centre-half, you love a clean sheet.

"We've got a lot of injuries at the minute and a few new guys coming in but I think you saw the commitment, the work-rate, the way we wanted to play the game.

"We deserved the points."

He added: "We needed it. It's a tough place to come - they're a very good side.

"We needed to stick with it for the 90 minutes and when you've had a little bit of a wobble you need something like that to really get you back on track."
