Fulton - We Showed What We Were About

Jay Fulton was one of the real plus points for me yesterday in what was an excellent win for the Swans away at Southampton.

Fulton came in for his first Premier League start of the season and I thought he put in an excellent display to frustrate the Saints and give the Swans their first win on the road in the league since the opening day of the season.

Playing along side Tom Carroll, Fulton grabbed his chance with both hands in what is a rare start for him. But injuries and suspensions forced Garry Monk into making changes in his midfield and one of those was to give Fulton a start.

It is hard to see where Fulton's future chances of a start may come with Ki due to return from the Asian cup and the signing of Jack Cork giving him extra competition for the place but he certainly did his own cause no harm with the display he put in.

He won plenty of the ball and looked composed every time he found himself in possession. He completed 35 of the 46 passes he completed which while it seems low for a Swans fixture it was comparable with the 77% that we completed as a team on a day when we attempted less than 400.

"We weren't happy after the last couple of games," said the Scot. "But we showed what we're about on Sunday and got the win that we needed.

"We wanted to frustrate them and play on the counter attack, and the manager told me to sit in and be patient.

"The longer the game went on the more you could sense they and their fans were getting frustrated.

"We worked the shape well and Jonjo got us the goal that we needed. We all know the quality that he's got and it was a great strike.

"I haven't played for a month or so but I'm happy to feature anytime. I was looking to maybe make that first start a little earlier this season, but it was great to finally get it - and to get the three points was very special."
