There is no trophy winning return from Australia as Manchester City are crushed in the final of the International Champions Cup by Real Madrid.

Manchester City were given a rude awakening in front of over 99,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as they were torn apart by Real Madrid in the final of the International Champions Cup.

New Real boss Rafa Benitez put out his strongest line-up, and it proved too much for City's youthful central defensive pairing of Jason Denayer and Cameron Humphreys and the rest of Manuel Pellegrini's depleted pre-season squad.

City, sporting their new away kit, enjoyed decent amounts of possession but were undone by ruthless Real finishing with Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe and Denis Cheryshev on target.

Yaya Toure scored City's solo effort from the penalty spot, although there was a heavy hint of fortune about that award.

Things also got worse for City when Fabien Delph had to leave the field with what looked to be a hamstring injury.

Manuel Pellegrini: “We knew before the game that it was difficult to play against a team with such good attackers without Mangala, Kompany and Demichelis,” Pellegrini reflected.

“You must also add the other players who are not here: Bony, Aguero, Fernandinho and Zabaleta.

“Especially defending, we knew it would be a difficult game. Mangala was sick this morning so he could not play and Kompany is becoming a father again so is not here.

“I’m not concerned as we had a lot of missing players and then a lot of players have also arrived late so they’ve worked just five days."
