Shelvey - Manchester United Deserved More

Jonjo Shelvey had a pretty good day yesterday as he played a vital part in the Swans 2-1 win over Manchester United before he ended the day confirmed as back in the England squad for their qualifying double header.

It has capped a pretty amazing turnaround in fortunes during 2015 for Shelvey who started the year with a four match ban thanks to an act of petulance against his former club but goes into September with a real chance of adding to his England career.

And he admits that it could have been all over for him at Swansea had he not changed the way that he approached the game following some very public criticism from his manager at the turn of the year

"I've just had to grow up. I had to or there was going to be no Swansea for me. I would have just been drifting around other clubs" he said."

"I want to fight for my place because it's a great squad we've got here and some great players. The players who have been brought in are superb."

Shelvey received a standing ovation from the Swans faithful when he left the pitch towards the end of yesterday's win but he believed that our visitors can count themselves unlucky not to get anything out of the game

"I felt they probably deserved more than what they got from the game, but it's a win against Manchester United at the end of the day," he added.

"We can compete with the bigger clubs now. I feel we're sort of on a par with them. We can go anywhere or any team coming here, we can get a result against them.

"I felt they'd watched our games from the previous few weeks with the way they set up.

"The main thing is we won and got through it with a good performance."
