Set Pieces - Not Really Our Strength?

I guess it probably seems a bit strange starting an article about set pieces not being our strength just 24 hours after Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a world class one for us against Crystal Palace but there will be very few fans that disagree with the sentiment that we can indeed defend them better.

Sigurdsson's free kick could - and probably should have set us on the road to victory but yet again we were undone by our defending from a corner when we let Scott Dann score the equaliser that in my view they probably did not deserve.

It has long seemingly been our Achilles heel that we cannot defend a corner and to be honest we are pretty bad at attacking them as well. Given the aerial ability of both Ashley Williams and Federico Fernandez you would expect some goals from these attacking pieces but they never come and then all too often we seem to go to sleep at the back when our opposition have a corner.

Midfielder Jack Cork said after the game against Palace: "That's something we need to put right

"We've conceded sloppy goals against West Brom and Crystal Palace and it has cost us a few points.

"The good thing is we looked pretty solid at set-plays apart from the one they've scored from but it has ended up costing us the win."

It is now three successive games that we have conceded from a corner and ultimately that has cost us four points which would have made a massive difference to our league position.

What is frustrating is that this has been the case for some time and yet we do not seem to improve. If there is one thing that Frankie needs to work on during the week it is this aspect of our game. Tightening up at the back will earn us more points especially at a time where we seem to find goals at a premium.

And once we have worked out how to defend them we can start working out how to get the best out of the attacking positions we get from them.
