Another Step Towards Wembley

The Swans' development squad can take another step towards Wembley this evening when they entertain Coventry City in the quarter final of the Checkatrade Trophy at the Liberty Stadium.

It is fair to say that there was some controversy when the Football League allowed development squads into the competition at the start of the season but now it is just the Swans one that remains and they have an excellent chance of adding their name to the roll of honour for a competition that already has the name of the Swans on their twice.

After wins in the knockout stages of the competition over the development teams of both Norwich and Wolves it is back to league opposition for the Swans this evening who came past both Plymouth and Newport in the early stages this season

Coventry City currently sit bottom of the League One but that does not mean that the Swans are taking their opponents lightly as Cameron Toshack explained

“We are really excited and looking forward to the challenge of playing another League One side,” he said.

“To be the last remaining academy side left in the competition is a huge achievement and gives us a great opportunity to fly the flag for development football.

“We have experienced some great tests in this tournament so far this season, which has included wins over Newport and Plymouth. Those wins heled us grow as a team, but Coventry will certainly be the biggest game of the season so far.

“Their side might be struggling in the league but they have won five games with 15 goals in this competition and shown they will not be push overs against younger sides as they have beaten Brighton and West Ham, so we must be prepared.”

The game at the Liberty kicks off at 7.30pm
