Danczuh, Lloyd or Howard 12:37 - Jun 5 with 8250 viewsoff2div1

As an exile I was wondering who will win the vote on Thursday. Will Lloyd Labour get in. Has Danczuh got a good following even though he's got bad image for an MP or will tories get in due to the split of Labour voter's.

Maybe there's a bit of wishful thinking involved, but I think Danczuk is a busted flush in Rochdale and could finish in fifth place.

Were there a prediction league, I'd go for:

Lloyd (Lab) 15k
Howard (Con) 9k
Kelly (LibDem) 8k
Baksa (Ukip) 7k
Danczuk 5k
Littlewood (HV) 1k

I can't see beyond Tony Lloyd winning in Rochdale. I'd be surprised if Danczuk got as may as 5,000 votes.

I don't support the LibDems by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd like to see Andy Kelly win, I reckon he'd make a cracking MP. Got to know him during the Co-op venture a couple of years ago, and he came across as pretty genuine

Unfortunately, I think we'll get the "helicoptered in" Tony Lloyd who'll use Westminster to further his own ambitions

Danczuk is a busted flush. He's finished. Hopefully, this election will signal the end of his tawdry political career. We need rid of him. Sexual allegations, allegations of fraudulent expense claims, suspension from the Labour Party. How can he ever be effective as an Independent MP ?

Tony Lloyd is currently a redundant ex-Manchester MP who has been 'parachuted' into this constituency, but probably has no REAL interest in Rochdale at all, apart from nominally becoming our MP and extending his Westminster stay. He could just as easily represent any other perceived 'safe' Labour constituency. The actual town of Rochdale is very much of secondary consideration.

The UKIP candidate I have never heard of and know nothing about. That said, she will make little impact. What are UKIP for ayway, now that we have voted to leave the EU ?

Andy Littlewood is a local lad, lives on Falinge, has his finger on the pulse in his locality and has the town at heart. He is a good local campaigner. That said, he is not a real candidate for MP.

Jane Howard is a local lass. She lives here, works here and raised her family here. She knows the town, knows what it needs and can identify with the people of the constituency seeks to represent. ...........

............Ditto Andy Kelly. A local bloke.

We haven't had a Conservative MP here since 1959 when Wentworth Schofield was our MP. Jane Howard has a realistic chance of succeeding given the disarray in the Labour Party camp and the contempt in which people hold Danczuk/Corbyn .

For me. it's going to be a fight between LibDems and Conservatives, as both are genuinely local, have a real affinity and strong personal connection with the town and actually seem to CARE about our future.

May the best candidate win.........and hopefully restore the good name of this proud town and its' people.

Never heard of her until the BBC showed 'that' programme. Hasn't been on the local radar before that.

We were FREQUENTLY a Tory town but not since Jack McCann was elected as our MP in the late 1950's. He was followed by Cyril Smith and a series of Liberal/LibDems, until Danczuk snatched it.

The demographic has changed radically in the intervening years but nothing is impossible.

Great OP and thanks for the comments SL - a good insight.

Do you know anything about the Heywood & Middleton candidates ? Would welcome a similar commentary from someone in the know

Great post SL. I've known AK for years since he was a barman at the Entwistle Arms, he's a cracking hard working lad, but I couldn't vote lid-dems as I don't like their policies and Farron is bonkers, and I don't believe in tactical voting. I think AK will get it as I don't think the Tories have a cat in hells chance in Rochdale the way the boundaries are split.

Err, I seem to remember somebody called Lorna Fitzsimmons representing the town ( or more accurately representing Lorna Fitzsimmons ) for a good few years not that long ago.

Do you think you can recall which party she was a member of ?

True. She had a small part in what now seems a distant past, yet she is not yet 50 (and over 17 years younger than the current Labour candidate Tony Lloyd).

Born in Littleborough and at school in Wardle, there could be a few readers of this forum who were her contemporaries.

Yet oddly enough, from 2001 until he resigned as Foreign Secretary in opposition to the Iraq war in 2003, she was parliamentary private secretary to Robin Cook.

Amazing, you'd think Cook would have had more sense.

Mrs Merciless went to the hustings tonight. Her view. Tony Lloyd head and shoulder above the rest. The Tory woman was a disaster. Danczuk and Kelly spent the evening bickering with each other. UKIP guy a real knuckle dragger. The homeless guy had lots of good ideas, needs to join a party though.

I like Andy Littlewood for his enthusiasm and passion about local issues. As you say, he would be an excellent Councillor, but is always swamped by the major party candidates.

Don't think it'll be an easy win. AK seems very popular with the Labour voters I know and have said they won't vote Labour while Corbyn's the leader and still pissed off with the grooming scandal.

The $64,000 question is this. Would Andy Kelly support Brexit which the majority of Rochdale referendum voters wanted or will he side with his party leader Minor Fart (anag) and seek to join with others to try and force another referendum?

Tony Lloyd has been a professional Labour politician for donkey's years without ever getting his hands dirty doing a proper job. He has managed to earn a very respectable sum from the public purse all his life, I am struggling to find a reason why the people of Rochdale should allow him to continue pulling in over £70k a year in salary and the better part of £200k in expenses at the age of 67 when most people he purports to represent are drawing a measly pension at that age having worked their spheres off for over 40 years.

I have met Jane Howard a few times, she seems a perfectly nice person.

Rochdale badly needs a renegade, someone who will put town first before party dogma, I am not sure if there is one amongst the current crop of candidates.

It's a shame that the party system has such a stranglehold on elections, we could do with a really good independent who could wheel and deal for Rochdale with whoever forms a government.

I agree, I don't believe ultimately that any of the candidates would put the interest of the town, when push comes to shove, over the overarching themes coming out of Westminster.
