Very sad news - the first reservoir drowning of the summer 08:55 - Jun 20 with 2530 viewsaleanddale

Greenbooth Norden last night.

Teenager believed to be a college student drowned whilst playing / swimming with friends.

We get one or two every summer it seems in Rochdale. (400 nationally)

Talk to your kids about the dangers - its difficult to get through but try regardless.

RIP the young fella and condolences to what will be a distraught family this morning.

I can only re-iterate what aleanddale says.....

When I saw this on the news last night, I was amazed that yet another teenager had perished at Greenbooth. It's almost unbelievable that people don't seem to have learned the lessons from previous recent years. There are plenty of signs in place warning of the hazards - and of the consequences of ignoring the warnings.

I know reservoirs (and canals) will always be a lure for teenagers in hot weather, especially lads, but there must surely be plenty of grieving families around Norden to keep these tragedies fresh in the mind.

Another senseless and avoidable loss of life........... I would like to think that there will be no more, but I won't hold my breath......

My pal and I were driving over to Hebden Bridge for a pint last night about 7.30 when we passed 3 mountain rescue vehicles going the other way very quickly. I wondered where they were going ?

My commiserations to the lads family.

I agree that these sort of events happen too regularly. I suppose it's very easy to be seduced by cool water on hot days.

Very sad news.

My friend's little brother Joseph drowned in Watergrove Res at the age of just 13 years ago. A tragic loss of a young life. He was a Rochdale fan as well and used to come to home and away games with us.

It's just not worth the risk.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

I walk around local ressez quite regularly with my partner, and there's always a few lads larking about on warm days, doing usual lad things like trying to impress the lasses, it'll always be that way. Sometimes the clear warnings only serve to egg them on, and from the mid-teens onwards there's often cans of ale being passed around

Not saying that was involved yesterday, but how do we get the message across any more clearly, without a complete ban? Not sure we can. Thoughts are with friends and family

My sister walked past the group of lads just prior to this happening and the picture was exactly as you explained it to be honest,as she got round the other side of the res she heard all the sirens and a couple of the other lads had jumped in to try and bring him back to the surface apparently, all very sad times as she walked next to a police man asking the group if anyone knew the lads address!!!Terrible knews but having lived very near Wardle Res for years we regularly jumped off the tower on hot days into the freezing water in the same spot I believe Chaff is talking about as there's a poster there last time I walked that way about the sad loss, all very sad news.....

Rules are there to be broken by some. Like young guns driving too fast. It's a senseless waste, but even prohibition won't stop those determined to do something. Tragic. Unfortunately, you can't put old heads on young shoulders in every case.

Very sad indeed .
Sadly the temptation in hot weather is too much for some to resist but resist they must.
These reservoirs have very powerful underwater filtration pumps that no one can ever escape if they get sucked towards one.

Unfortunately, research shows that some young men simply do not have a particularly well-developed sense of risk or the possible outcomes of taking part in risky behavior. It affects them in school, at home and in situations that others perceive as being inherently dangerous. Sadly I don't think there is much that will prevent this kind of risk-taking behavior.
