But what about those awaiting a decision? If the numbers applying are greater than the capacity to cope with their applications, local authorities have to provide services for them and their children, some can be years waiting for a decision. Any teacher or school governor can tell you about kids rolling up at school often unable to speak a word of English together with someone from social services, or in the case of one I know about, a note in English on their phone from SS asking for the child to be admitted... and if there is room at the school they are obliged to accept. The same applies to doctors etc.
Asylum seekers are just that, people wanting to live here because they dont want to live somewhere else. There is no guarantee of acceptance.. so they wait and get the benefit of the local systems until they are either accepted or their appeals eventually fail. And dont forget the numbers only count the person applying for asylum, not their dependants. All Asylum Seekers and Refugees are permitted to register with a GP all children aged 5- 18 have a right to education.

My wife is a school teacher.

I've heard about these issues so many times.

"The same applies to doctors etc."

Absolutely not so. The NHS and General Medical Council have strict criteria about immigrants who can and cannot be employed as a doctor in the UK.

You were talking about illegal immigrants taking resources before, that's different than asylum seekers, who the authorities know the exact numbers for and yes while awaiting their application are entitled to medical help etc. That's why the government must do better with dealing with applications. They cut back on the staff dealing with the claims, they haven't provided enough centres to temporarily house them while their applications are assessed. The problem of illegal immigrants is a totally different one, as it's completely unknown how many there are, unlike asylum seekers. One thing I do know, many of these people could be working doing the jobs that are needed in the farms and other areas of the economy that have labour shortages while they wait for their decision.

Exactly this, unfortunately there is no appetite for this present government to have an effective asylum system in place as it detracts from the dog whistle politics of blaming refugees for this countries failings. There is no point trying to reason with the right whingers - sorry wingers their minds are made up and everything else is fake news.

Just been reported by James O'Brien on LBC that the BBC are going to apologise to Lineker and he's back on the beep.

It's been agreed that the guidelines need updating, to reflect the complexity of the different roles of presenters in different formats

Until then, Lineker has agreed not to make overt political tweets. It may well be, he won't be making any more overt political tweets, using language insulting to many (not least Jewish communities) full stop

Despite the show of "solidarity", i'd still like to know what Alan Shearer really thinks, as per my first post in this thread

The BBC has said that it will have a review into its social media policy, yeah right, translated they didn't expect it to escalate in this way and they desperately want to shut down the conversation before the chairman and director general of the BBC are forced to resign.
This whole incident was totally unnecessary and has painted the BBC in a very bad light.
Incidentally Baroness Sayeeda Warsi (a tory) has said that it's not just the perceived damage to the impartiality of the BBC at home but internationally as the BBC world service is/was respected throughout the globe.

It's not a personal attack, calling you a numpty would be a personal attack, I stated that you are wrong; you said:

"he won't be making any more overt political tweets, using language insulting to many (not least Jewish communities) full stop"

Suggesting that what he said insulted Jewish communities is totally wrong and/or a clear attempt to gaslight.

If that's what you believe, then I refer you to a video of a holocaust survivor confronting Braverman about her language, where she EXPLICITLY compares it to 1930s Germany. Just as Lineker did:

They are both correct.

Yep it's purposely made into more of an issue than it needs to be because the ruling classes, backed by the right wing media, know it's a potential vote winner. The Government are trying to make it the top issue at the moment and are just echoing what the billionaire-run Mail and the Express (among other media outlets) have been doing for years in demonising migrants. Divide and rule is the oldest trick in the book.

We're a rich country. Of course there are limits to how many people any country can accept, but with better funding of public services, more extensive housebuilding programmes and more investment across the country (all of which we need more of anyway) there wouldn't be this perception of feeling stretched. Instead they would rather underinvest and use inflammatory language like 'swarms', invasions', 'stop the boats', we're full' etc. Braverman has even been suggesting 'millions' and 'billions' could come here - pure scare tactics.

We could do with a bit more empathy too - I couldn't really imagine what it would feel like to flee from persecution. And for those arriving here from poorer countries to make a better life for themselves, well I wouldn't begrudge that ambition although others might. I'm not denying there are issues like criminal gangs and trafficking but they can be dealt with better with more sturdy processes in place.

Sadly can't imagine previous Tory governments being this extreme, wouldn't have happened under Major or even Thatcher. The last few years, fuelled by Brexit, have seen the current incumbents turn into a version of UKIP. Sad to see but this is all they have now - they're losing their reputation as being a safe pair of hands with the economy and Labour are trying to capture that middle ground.

I watched it out of curiosity to see how they produced it, I rarely bother most of the time usually so there could have been a similar trend where people were intrigued.

It was a tough watch without commentary, mainly because I know so few Premier League players these days so trying to work out who plays where etc was difficult. They add facts too, like announcing a corner ball.
It’s all a personal taste thing really, I don’t often watch live games but enjoy listening to Neville and Carragher on Sky for example. With the MOTD panel, on the occasions I do watch it’s when there are people there I like to hear talk about the game. Not Micah Richards or Martin Keown.

Can't abide Martin "Arsenal AND ENGLAND" Keown.....so arrogant.

Lineker and the BBC DG have been exemplary in the dignified manner in their public statements today, especially Lineker name checking Tim Davie.

It's perfectly natural to have low opinions of those who govern us, and it is very easy for government policy to be interpreted differently.

You would hope that any disagreement on here would follow the example set by Messrs Lineker and Davie.

As Judd said, we should stay in line with the exemplarily dignified behaviour of Lineker:

I'm sorry that you see this is a game... I'm not going to compare the Daily Express with an actual holocaust survivor, especially when the Express article is using GB News as its source.

This was nothing to do with impartiality, this was about Tory MPs leaning on the BBC to shut down someone with a huge following that was shining a light on their despicable behaviour and attempted transition into a full-on culture war.

There are literally scores of examples of BBC presenters making statements/saying things/tweeting/attending events, far more political than what Lineker said; and none of them raised a peep from Dorries, 30p Lee and all the other cranks.

Karren Brady is a sitting Conservative life peer in the HOL adhering to the Tory whip as far as I can see; and it's fine for her to be co-presenting a flagship BBC program? Let alone what Alan Sugar has tweeted!!!

It's wrong, that's it, just wrong, and it is EXACTLY like 1930s Germany!

To be fair you do come across a bit like me dad, who's favorite saying was.
"There are only 2 rules in this house. Rule 1, I am always right. Rule 2, in the event of me being wrong, rule 1 applies"

That was not meant a a personal insult, just a bit of humour. I hope you take it that way.

I wasn't comparing "the Daily Express with an actual holocaust survivor"

The source of the article is a Rabbi, i.e a leader of a Jewish community, as i suggested in my post about Jewish communities feeling insulted by Lineker's use of language

My point about keeping this thread at the level of opinions applies to the above. I wasn't wrong

The BBC has fallen well behind the standards set at Sky. Hansen was fairly groundbreaking when he came on but since he retired they've lost their way. Richards gets gigs for his personality but it's mystifying how Keown does. Shearer and Murphy aren't much better. Neville, Carragher, Keane and Souness are another level.

Yes we definitely need more empathy in this country. Can you imagine being so in fear of your and your families live that you leave your home, travel halfway across Africa (and the Mediterranean) or Asia across Europe facing hostility from the locals through Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and some such places, borders closed to you, being forced back at gunpoint, camps being torched by angry mobs. Risking your life in a night-time crossing of the Channel to be detained in a camp behind barbed wire unable to work until you contract diphtheria. You're not doing that for a few bob extra are you?
I am an economic migrant. Growing up in Rochdale in the 1970's and looking for work in the 80's, being told by your careers adviser that there is nothing out there other than a YTS scheme. It's no wonder I f***** off to Essex and Thatcher's heartland for work. Wasn't it Norman Tebbitt who was so proud of his dad for getting on his bike?

I was once told by a Granada TV employee that they dreaded a scenario whereby the BBC was funded by advertisements.
They believed that the good advertisers would rather be on BBC than ITV because they had better programmes and that this would mean a serious drop in revenue for the latter.
Just imagine for example the clamour for advertising space in breaks during Strictly Come Dancing or, ironically enough, MOTD.
