That's the one, couldn't meet a nicer more genuine chap either, he was stood with Simon Gauge yesterday before the game having a chat and shaking hands for quite a while and had their photo took together.

Galloways involvement has thrown the proverbial grenade into this election. He will take large chunks out of the Labour vote especially now the Labour Candidate has been shown to be an antisemite. Danczuk seems to be keeping his powder dry and hoping for a big anti-Labour backlash and the Tories are nowhere to be seen or heard...
In other news a young girl has been raped on the station near Morrissons by 4, 12-14 year old boys.
This stuff is exactly what will make someone thinking of putting millions into the local football club have second thoughts...well anyone thinking of investing in Rochdale at all really

Tully sounds like a good lad, but I fear he overestimates what can be achieved as an MP, he would do better fronting a campaign to get himself and a couple of dozen like him to be elected onto Rochdale Council. Thats the place he could make a real difference and there are others in the Borough who would back him. I think its great the we have independents standing the exposure alone is worth their time and energy... now if they were to work together to take the Council by the scruff of the neck and boot out the troughers and ignoramuses...... | | | |

It's a fair point. Chances are he'd be swallowed up by the Westminster machine (if elected) but equally, any MP from one of the main parties would just become lobby fodder so not much difference there

Fortunately finding people is less of a problem than you might imagine, look at the number of Middleton Independents who have been elected recently.... There are people in Heywood that I have come across who are looking for a leader. Maybe Tully is that man? Its clear Party politics can't fix our problems we need people who have a vision for the town that goes beyond Westminster's ideas. The local Tories have become a joke, they are fixated on potholes, rubbish and street signs. Their " big ideas" dont go much further than a coffee morning and the annual dinner.

Not a good look at all , this new revelation of rape in early evening. Just more publicity the town could well do without. Even as the last horrors to young girls are prevalent as the perpetrators still skulk the streets.

It's a heck of a leap from being independent (an Independent) and assuming a leadership role over a group of people. They'll start off like-minded, but people who're independent-minded tend not to react well to being organised
The party machines, at both national and local level, have been designed to swallow independent-mindedness for breakfast. This isn't being negative btw, just realistic
I wish Tully well, who knows, he might even get my vote. I posted earlier in the thread that if Labour selected the local lad Waugh, he'd get my vote, but instead they chose a party hack who's now embarrassed himself and spat out the usual "apologies" between clenched teeth
There's a long way to go till the 29 February; let's see what else comes out of the woodwork, for the delectation of the rest of the country | |

My partner is a true southerner with little interest in current affairs and even she has notice that Rochdale is a magnet for bad news stories. It grinds me down.
Good luck to any well meaning local who stands for an MP or councillor. They are really difficult positions to fill in the social media age, especially if you have a young family. It’s a generation since the very decent ex BBC journalist Martin Bell manage to gain a seat in Parliament as an independent, and I struggle to see a world where that would be possible now.
But I could see Paul W being selected over Ali for the General Election as the local party will have more autonomy in the selection process. I hope that is the outcome.

Yes, he can still stand in the by election but not as the official Labour candidate, and it's too late for Labour to select a replacement under the rules
If he wins and he's deselected at the GE he can still stand but under his own banner, whatever that might be
The same has happened with the Green Party candidate, but too late for another one
