Ah, the nub of the gist! Isn't this the circle that cannot be squared? Are not "safeguards" precisely what are required to be removed in order to secure the "investment"? |
Not necessarily. There are two very different things at play here.
First, the unwieldy ownership structure makes it very difficult to execute a sale of the club, especially if the buyer wants every penny they commit to go into the club’s bank and not into the pockets of existing shareholders. If existing shareholders were simply asked to gift their shares to a new owner the odds are they wouldn’t agree, but that is, in effect, what’s being achieved by the issuance of nine million A shares without any preemption rights for existing shareholders. To be clear, I don’t object to this.
Second, is the question of what is being sold and whether there are any conditions or restrictions built into the sale. There are examples of clubs being sold without ownership of their stadium, for example, and others where the seller secured on obligation on the buyer to consult and/or require approval before taking certain actions. The long-term benefit of selling the operating company only, for example, or of retaining a ‘golden share’, are obvious. Whether a deal along these lines might have been achievable I don’t know, but my sense is the board didn’t try.
The corporate strategy seems to have gone from one extreme to the other and the curious resolution on the audit seems to symbolise that.

Didn’t come across as rude to me. He raised a really important point, and as Murray initially got the wrong end of the stick he had to clarify and reiterate his point.
Given the other shenanigans at the trust board, it was right Murray got questioned, and he agreed on both points raised to take them away for action. [Post edited 29 Feb 21:48]

I didn’t find him rude at all. He made a very good point which I reckon a lot of people will want to know the position regarding a vote reset and Murray didn’t grasp it at all to begin with

I watched the forum on you tube, due to not being able to attend in person. I was hoping more credible investors would have also appeared on the scene to give us a choice but it appears not. I was heartened to hear that the Chairman and Directors will come to some sort of arrangement with the new investors in order to recoup some of their outlay, the Chairman was upfront about that so credit to him. It's too much money just to write off. He also made a good point about no local council would be willing to approve houses to be built and Spotland to be flattened, Steve Dale couldn't do that at Bury.
It's a leap into the unknown but the credentials of the Americans look decent so I'm now thinking that maybe this is the best chance we are going to get. McNulty was great and one fan in the room paid him a tremendous heartfelt compliment which must have touched him deeply. Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel and we can finally all put down the tools and start to do what we haven't done for several years, stop worrying and start to enjoy supporting our fantastic football club again. As a fan base I think we are all weary with it now aren't we? [Post edited 29 Feb 22:00]

An excellent meeting overall. A timely release of information about a potential (and welcome, looking at it) takeover, combined with some direct and honest sounding answers from the top table helped matters no end. Openness and honesty works! We don't know right now, but this could be the start of good times.
The club have seemingly played a blinder getting proper investment in after decades of nothing. Speaking to Richard Knight afterwards, it appears Simon Gauge is the man who made it happen, as well as bankrolling the club for months. Maybe history will be kinder to him than the present has been. Time will tell.

As Jim pointed out, the players feel, see and hear everything. So does the Chairman who used to be on Twitter (nay still be) and has read some dedpicable stuff? I don't suppose he was born with a bunker mentality but when told to 'feck off out of our club' ..... He did come across as relieved but also pretty happy with bringing matters close to what appears to be a win-win-win solution. Fingers crossed it all plays out in the best way. | |

Most people with any sort of money move out of Rochdale, its not hard to see he might have arrived here and wondered where on Earth he had landed, but slowly he seems to be adapting to his new reality and I am gratetul for his generosity. Simon Gauge is no better than any of us, if that's what you are suggesting. He hasn't just arrived in Rochdale I don't think, somebody said he's from the Luton area..give me Rochdale any day. It seems that this was the only option open to the Chairman but I would still like it confirming from the Trust Board rep that all other options were properly explored in a effort to avoid a significant amount of fans and shareholders having to vote through the motions at the EGM. Only Gauge and those in the Boardroom will know tge answer to that. If that's the case then yes, history could be kind should this deal go through. If it doesn't I'm hoping he hasn't burned bridges with others who might have been deemed suitable. | | | |
