I am 70 years old I live near Inverness and I follow I.C.T.
I am posting on here because of the cup run. I remember my grandfather Richard Ogden who was born in the 1860s . He died in the 1950s. But I remember how he told me as a small boy the history of Rochdale football club. He told me of the first match when he was the linesman.
He took me as a child to watch Rochdale and I clearly remember they beat Mansfield 7 nil in the third Division North.
Some years later I went with my own Dad to Spotland there was nearly 20,000 people in the ground to watch the first ever league match against Bury who had only recently been relegated from the old Div 2. Bury were a powerful outfit in those days and nobody gave the Dale a prayer. The match ended I think in a goalless draw.
Anyway good luck in the cup run. I am sure my Granddad will be looking down on Spotland. incidentally he lived I think in a place called Daniel Fold which was at the top of a big hill near the ground.

Thanks for your post. Lots of interesting stuff. Hope we progress further. Listening to radio 5 and Talksport and no mention of Dale! Sat on seafront in Dover trying to manage a Blackberry. Bit like Flitcroft!

Rochdale beat Mansfield 7-1 on 4 March 1950, so you'd be about six years old. The other match you mention was probably on 5 October 1957 - Dale 1 Bury 1, with a crowd of 18,728. In the 50s my Dad used to take me to matches.

Hi
Sorry your cup run ended. I had high hopes of travelling south to watch them next round. My aunt lives in Milnrow nearly 100 years old she owned a travel agency on Drake St.
and my sister lives in Haslingden.
My team these days is I.C.T which is a mouthful Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Which was formed between two rival outfits Thistle and Caledonian. The thistle fans the Caley fans call Jag heads and they often even today goad each other. Anyway the book about the merger is a download on their web site and reads better than a novel. ICT are in the Semi Final against Hearts in Edinburgh on Sunday nearly a 3 hour drive from Inverness. I shall be on the bus at 7.30 am as it is a lunch time,e K O and the match starts an hour before the first train gets into Edinburgh.
By the way the book title is against all Odds. To put it into perspective imagine how you would feel if they made you amalgamate with Bury or Oldham. The Caley fans it is said set fire to the Thistle ground so they wouldn't have to play on it. The team had to travel each home game to Aberdeen over hundred miles away at one point. until Ross County got promoted last year our Derby game was against ST Johnstone another 100 mile trip. Just be glad you play loads of teams nearer than that.

I remember that Bury game,I was stood near the corner flag closest to the Church Inn. If that date is correct I would`ve just had my 9th birthday. I recall Dale beating Hartlepool United 7-0 around that time, but bloody missed it as it was Guy Fawkes Day and we were all busy getting the bonfire ready!

Hi Lawrence, as child I spent many holidays in Beauly at family friends and can remember going to watch Clacknacuddin in Inverness. I always look to see ICT results.

Yes I knew Big Jim got five goals that day. Think Dale got him from Workington, but as usual decent players didn`t stay too long, though I can`t remember where he went to. Can anybody remember Gwynfer Lewis who Dale bought from Wrexham around that time? He played on the left wing from memory and was a good player, but once again he was another who didn`t stay too long, going to Chesterfield and guess what,he scored twice the next time they came to Spotland in a 3-2 victory for his new team!
