THANKYOU FA, SHORT FOR FK ALL AS PER USUAL 20:02 - Nov 12 with 1938 viewsizzitme

Yes many thanks for our festive fixtures this year. I can't wait to travel to scunny on Boxing Day. What fkn nonsense.
Then, like some stupid afterthought, we have a home game just 2 days later on Sunday!
Izzit me?

The Football League arrange the fixtures.

We travelled to Scunthorpe on New Year's Day last season; it was our third game in seven days.

Some clubs are at home on Boxing Day (like we were last season) and away two days later.

Festive football and all its games is one of the best times of the season.

What's the problem?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Izzitme (it is), can you give examples of when festive fixtures have been anything much different than they are this year?

We could go back to playing on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Yes it's you! Travelling to Scunthorpe on Boxing Day will take less time than it would do on a weekend or Tuesday night and another game 2 days later in the Christmas period is normal.

Clubs request to avoid derby games, if possible, on Boxing Day as they can get a good crowd for a derby at any time of the season, as well as getting a higher-than-usual crowd on Boxing Day.

E.g. Scunthorpe v Dale on Boxing Day is likely to attract a better crowd than if it was played in the middle of February.

It doesn't always work out that way (for instance, the high number of London clubs in the Premier; Torquay, Plymouth & Exeter all being in the same division last season), but it's very rare for Boxing Day to have a 'proper' derby matches.

There's also potential police costs being inflated somewhat on Boxing Day.

Maybe they should also have ensured Derby matches don't fall on an FA Cup 3rd round weekend when there is a possibility the game will be cancelled due to one or both clubs still being involved. Will a rearranged midweek fixture attract as big a crowd?

New Years Day is the Tameside Derby between Ashton United & Curzon Ashton yet they want Oldham Athletic Away played on the 3rd January 2015 which don't make sense even though it'll probably be off because of either side in 3rd Round of The FA Cup

Probably not, but that's why it's never going to be a perfect system that pleases and suits everyone.
