Refwatch - Rochdale v Scunthorpe United

We all have differing opinions from time to time. However I’m not keen on a player who the majority of the contributors on here feel played well and put in a shift being demeaned numerous times, for the sake of trying to stand on a point. Your remark about Rodney standing scratching his arse is crass.

Dev is a joy to watch when he is on it. His control and awareness create space for others and cause panic in the opposition. Given his abilities I don’t know why he can’t also turn in anonymous performances quite often. Last night was the former but despite his form we couldn’t breakdown a resolute defence. Having had successful attacking intent at 0-1 and 1-1 in the first half, seemed odd to me that Scunny went so defensive immediately after half time. Maybe they decided they could not match us up for the whole game.
It was a good performance against decent opposition, so onto the next match in pole position.

One man’s naivety is another man’s very good squad management. Since the turn of the year we have seemed to do quite well. Although some may say that’s a naive view.

at 19:25 12 Feb 2026

That is the ideal position, of course. I would just point out since our 4-1 loss to York in mid November we have dropped 3 points and they have dropped 4. The pressure is very much on them not to have any more stumbles. They have failed to get maximum points on 10 occasions this season, for a loss of 22 points. We have dropped 14 points from the 5 games we haven’t won.
Both teams will drop points before the end of the season, but the fact is they have a greater propensity to drop points than we do.
So York will have to turn that trend around, and we are both such strong sides it is not easy to see that happening.

You sort of miss my point TS, I am.not saying he shouldn’t include them in the squad or team, but a long away trip on a Saturday followed by yet another tough game on Tuesday, has undone several teams this season. Jim is cautious in this regard and I can definitely see some starters on Tuesday not being on the coach on Saturday. Do I think the two G’s won’t be travelling, no. They will want to play every game. One player I do think will start on Saturday is Allerakia. In any event we will put out a team capable of winning.

Not so, we don’t have to hope York stumble. The reverse is literally the case.

To the game itself. Who knew Dan Moss had that pass in his locker, brilliant. Mani finishes it great. Also Mani does like that tap in with the heel part of his foot. BH and Carlisle away and his first last night. How did we win all those games in his absence, superb when you think about it.
Callum Perry in the highlights makes a mistake and FGR didn’t capitalise. He is learning fast which can only benefit us and Coventry.
When it comes to substitutions Jim is developing balls of steel. I wouldn’t have had the nerves to make some of them. Taking East of while Harvey is sitting on a yellow shows his faith in Harvey’s professionalism.
On to Yeovil and who will Jim decide to rest by not asking them to get on the coach. For me both The G’s Gordon and Gilmour deserve a rest. But I think Jim would have to fight them to stop them getting on the coach. My other question is will he play young Perry every game, injury permitting, until the end of the season? If he were ours I think not, but he is a loanee so I can see him doing it.
Great days these.

Robbie Savage has gone for the tactic of blowing smoke up Jim’s and the team’s arse. It’s not a bad option to try, if you think there is a chance Jim and the boys listen to his views. However I doubt they do.
Tomorrow requires yet another big effort from us, but let’s face it every game requires a big effort now. However York are the team that can’t afford a slip up, which is an even more stern mental and physical challenge. Every win we get is a blow to York. Keep the pressure on lads.

Decent amount of L1 and 2 experience. Has the feel of a signing where we are preparing to re enter the EFL. Not a bad policy at this stage.

I remember the mad sequence of games under BBM when we scoring 3 goals a game, think Wigan and Charlton were two of them, but I don’t think we won any of them. This forum was ablaze with criticism. So much for the fans loving free flowing football.

My heart rate has just returned to normal.
TBH neither side particularly deserved to win that game last night, but one did through sheer bloody mindedness. Sure you might not love the football but you can’t not love the spirit.
I know Jim’s interviews are often derided on here but after the match he gave an interesting insight. In the first half we were great at finding / using what little pockets of space that were available. After the break not so much. Jim said Southend made a small tactical change which we had to respond to, but in turn that nullified the game for a while. Didn’t have a prayer of picking up on that myself.
Courtesy of Owain’s vlog from the Sandy (if you post on here thanks for doing these) two things stood out. Whatmuff’s reaction to the winning goal going in, brilliant. Then in the last minute , Gordon after suffering cramp when fouling the opposition twenty seconds later is the player making the vital headed clearance in the last second of the game . What a star that lad is.
A horrible game on the horizon for York come Saturday, the best they can do is stay a couple of league wins behind us, and who knows what version of Solihull Moors will turn up.

As the lone Daley in Southend I was gutted I hadn’t come up when we went 2-1 up. But I have this ridiculous inner feeling that if I had made the trip for the third time we would have lost.
Both Gordon and Gilmour were great tonight. Plus Manny held the ball up and played it through for Pritch, I don’t think and other Dale player could have done that at that stage.
Gordon dances every dance, and I noticed he got cramped up after the foul in the final minute. Of anyone he needs a rest, but he is very difficult to replace in that side.
Watched the game with my brother in law and me nephew and they were magnanimous in defeat, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the brother in law didn’t spit in me tea after the game. It would have still tasted sweet tonight anyways.
JIim give the team and bench two days off now. They deserve it.

Off the highlights that was much better than I had expected from the result alone. I said after Solihull Perry will do a job for us. That statement undersold him. He looks a real quality signing. We did it well I thought.
Now looking to the future I expect the strongest side available to be out on Tuesday night. Manny D will probably only do 45 minutes, which needs to be the first half. But let’s have.no moaning if we are not winning when he is removed. With him slow and steady will reap the rewards. Southend set up beautifully against us in December and stopped our intent without stifling their own. We changed it up a half time and we’re better. So if Southend try and repeat the same trick on Tuesday we should already have the answers from lessons learned.
As for York since Maynard took over I can’t say how many points they have dropped, but they have dropped 16 points from draws this season. I wouldn’t be surprised if our points per game tally is not any worse than their’s since the managerial change. Definitively this league title is still ours to loose. That’s not putting pressure on the players it’s a fact. There will be points won and lost from now on in but if we win 3, draw one and loose 1 of the five games against the top 8 clubs in the next month we will still be the team to beat. The is achievable.
Let’s keep the positive vibe going.

Another hard fought game for Southend. They won’t have much of a turnaround before they are back up the A1 a second time in 3 days.
They are now 15 points behind us, but there big incentive on Tuesday in that they have dropped out of the playoffs, albeit with games in hand.
Boreham Wood losing back to back is so unusual for teams in the top 7. But it creates that distance between the top two and the rest.

In the back of my mind I have the thought that Jim’s selections may manifest themselves by way of players not travelling for away games featuring prominently in the next home game. Now.there may be injuries at play here, but if I’m correct that would see Burger and Barlow being involved. So que an unchanged team!

Ironically McBride is one of the players that can hit a screamer, one in a home win earlier this season and the away win last year against Yeovil when he really ripped on to get a late winner. Where has that confidence gone?

Bizarre. The sort of thing in the past you might have suspected to hear on a Dale commentary.

What a strange game that was. I respect Millington’s book of work, but was surprised that given they sat 10th, we’re in decent form and in little fear of relegation, that they didn’t give it a go. The commentators refrain was no pressure on the ball. At least that result in less physical effort required by us. Although we did at least press them.
We find ways to win and we did so again last night. The most games won and the least games played. Last night was demonstration of why that is.
TVOS may correct me but that is now three opportunities to do the double over a team and three executed. It’s doesn’t sit comfortably with most Dale fans but we are the team to beat in this league, not York.
Should neither Southend or FGR beat us at home I think they are both out of the running for automatic promotion. Beat Boring Wood, Scunthorpe and Carlisle would make us really difficult to catch. I’m getting a bit giddy now (one game at a time and all that).
Thought Perry looked to have settled well last night. He will do a job for us.
I do watch the BJ interviews, yesterday he used the word bravery 5 times in a six minute interview. Steady on Jim it’s only football.

Yesterday was just what we needed, win away, clean sheet, plenty of players getting game time, new arrivals slotting in very well and a win following a loss. I was surprised the Whatmuff is back. I honestly expected a recall and for him to be loaned out to a league club, ssshh. The last ten minutes of games in this league yesterday are an illustration of why I love this sport. Always something for fans to cling to.
Now I know we have a lot of games on the horizon, but I would urge BJ to go with his strongest 11 available, and just mix the bench against Solihull. There will be better opportunities to change things up later on this hectic run of games.
So far I am loving it.

Not a match I relish. Not all our players are match fit, even some who don’t have knocks have had limited match time this month. Gateshead have the prodigal son manager returning and a stack of new players. To balance that the main goal threat has departed. Would love a comfortable win, but will be happy with an ugly win. Just need to get back on track today.
