The question is, and has been all season, why is our squad in this physical condition?

Quietly... no manager likes young players. They get you the sack.

Mark Warburton came in here with a tremendous reputation of youth development, Next Gen league and all that. When push came to shove, he wanted Lee Wallace, Moses Odubajo, Dom Ball, Andre Gray. He'd rather name five subs than risk an Aaron Drewe.

I don't blame him for that by the way, I wouldn't have picked Joe Gubbins either and the "development club" and people running the academy at that time needed telling, but it's a familiar story. When Stephan came here it was all "Dembele, Doku, Raphinha" as part of the pitch. Then, the second it gets tough, here's Rhys Norrington Davies, because Dembele, Doku and Raphinha are extraordinary exceptions to the rule.

I fcking hate that twt that runs Dorking and his little YouTube channel, but at least he just comes out and says it - I hate young players, they let you down. Every manager wants a 30-year-old with 500 appearances who knows what it takes to win football games. Because if they lose 5 or 6 football games in a row, they get the blame and the sack.

WLS podcast Dave Kev James
at 21:08 23 Jan 2026

Dave knows what he's doing and quite revels in the Twitter anger I think in a way that I don't/can't. The headline on that podcast today a prime example.

It's not healthy though that what few journalists we have left covering QPR professionally now (Dave, Ian, myself) have all been set upon this season by the same group of a dozen social media accounts for the temerity of occasionally straying from the line that "the leader is good, the leader is great".

Coventry's Obikwu brings familiar profile to QPR attack - Signing
at 16:57 22 Jan 2026

Forgive the late arrival of this piece, but it has enabled us to bring a new analyst on board.

Congratulations to Greg Spires who did great work for us for the last few years and has subsequently been hired as an opposition scout at Motherwell - not doing too badly either judging by their results.

Welcome Zac Bowles (couldn't help be a QPR fan with a name like that could he?) who has done the video clips and analysis on Obikwu for us and can be followed on the Twitter @TheLoftInsights - please give him a follow and a nice welcome.

Well I could basically write a whole match preview on that (maybe tomorrow!) but I think a couple of things...

1 - We naturally sit a lot deeper when they're our centre backs. So probably no coincidence we've stopped conceding goals, because they're good centre backs and it's very hard to break down when they're standing on top of the goalkeeper. But also no surprise we're struggling even more to progress the ball. As we always say, Edwards/JCS look like Gods in this team because they carry it out and progress it.

2 - Their outlets on both wings are playing really poorly. There's a big difference atm between spreading the play to Ilias Chair and spreading it to Karamoko Dembele.

3 - The whole team's "out ball" is not here now Burrell is injured. We can't just knock it and turn the full back around now, because nobody is quick enough to chase it. Actually wouldn't be surprised to see this Coventry lad getting some action quite quickly.

4 - It's not the first time during their time here that these two, Cook and particularly Dunne, have stuck their hand up and put their shoulder to the wheel for the team when things are going a bit awry. You've been quite disparaging of Dunne, particularly as a right back, and wanted him shifted on, whereas when he was going to Sheff Utd last year I said this could be a very big mistake. Not everybody can be a development prospect. Not everybody here can be some 21-year-old data pick up for "the project". You have to have players who care about the place and want to be here because it's QPR and it's a great club. If you go too far the other way and your whole squad is a) very young and inexperienced and b) only here because they've been told 'play well for 18 months and we'll sell you to a proper club' then things can quickly go wrong when the going gets tough. Who's playing well at the moment? Who's playing poorly. It's pretty stark.

It's why I'm not mad about the idea of letting Field go. Nourry said something I was really impressed with about 18 months ago when he was tying down Dunne, JCS, Field, Smyth types to new deals, much to the chagrin of Twitter, about having a spine and a core of players who love QPR and love being here. If you've got a squad of 11 players who are all young, inexperienced and only here because they've been told it'll be a stepping stone to something better then when you're stuck at Oxford in a howling gale on a Tuesday night in january don't be surprised if those lads aren't very good, while Jimmy Dunne is standing there with his body on the line making sure we get a point.

VAR in the EFL
at 12:13 22 Jan 2026

Totally.

I genuinely rarely used to miss a game. Looked forward to sitting down for Monday Night Football. Used to base all our Saturday pub choices on whether they had Sky or not.

I can barely get through a Premier league game any more. I think I managed half of Brighton v Bournemouth on Monday, realised how few of the players I know at that level now.

It's not even the fcking time and the stupid decisions it comes up with, it's just the omnipresent nature of it. Every five minutes, every time the ball goes in the box, "that was checked and cleared". Every offside this palava where we play on for a bit and then the flag goes up miles after the fact.

It's wrecked it for me. I've said before if I was the EFL I'd be running ad campaigns in Premier league matches showing a mixture of refereeing howlers and last minute goal celebrations under a catchline football as it used to be/meant to be.

Said that about Chair on the Awaydays podcast.

Clean sheets - goalkeeper is playing well after a period of uncertainty in that position, Jimmy Dunne is playing exceptionally well, and him and Cook sit very deep on top of the keeper. That's no good for us going forwards really, but it is difficult to break down.
