They lost in spite of the fact they had a massive media campaign in the News and Hampshire Live to drum up votes for their player, using the fact that Morecambe were asking for help from Southampton as bait. I remember when they had a campaign for Portsmouth fans to vote for the worst shirt in an online poll to choose Saints' new shirt. They lost both polls because Saints have so many more fans than they do, which is something they find hard to accept.

Lists of fanbases online as measured on Facebook, Twitter etc always show that Saints have more than five times as many fans as Little Pompey and that's being very generous to them. Saints have more than 3.1 mill followers on Facebook compared to just 253,630 for Pompey and 1.4 mill followers on Twitter compared to just 154,000 for Pompey. So if even 10% of Saints fans voted in an online poll while 50% of Pompey's did, the Saints fans would still outvote them. Of course, the same thing would happen to us if we tried to compete in an online poll against Man United.

Let's also not forget that they shag goats and sheep in the street.
