Arteta & Benayoun v Fabregas & Nasri: The stats
Arteta & Benayoun v Fabregas & Nasri: The stats
Thursday, 1st Sep 2011 21:09

Ignoring the sales of Fabregas and Nasri, Arsenal have definitely strengthened this season but are their replacements up to scratch.

Fabregas 2005-2011: 254 games, 53 goals, 96 assists

Nasri 2005 - 2011: 267 games, 38 goals, 44 assists

Benayoun 2005 - 2011: 162 games, 39 goals (unknown assists)

Arteta     2005 - 2011:  195 games, 32 goals, 39 assists

Considering the last ditch nature of the deals, these two Premiership stalwarts were fairly obvious signings and Arteta in particular has caught the imagination of many Arsenal fans. The Spaniard has never been in the national team but his stats prove that he has still delivered consistently. He started his career at Barcelona and, like Fabregas, moved abroad to find first team football. He first went to PSG and then signed for Rangers where he had two very successful years. He then struggled at Real Sociedad but after only a season Everton took him on loan and then made the move permanent. He enjoyed great success under David Moyes, becoming Everton's highest paid player before he took a pay cut to come to Arsenal. However, many Everton fans will tell you that he peaked five years ago for them and although he still has superb ability, he has not dominated in the way he did in his mid-twenties. Of course this could also be due to the team that he has played in deteriorating.

Yossi Benayoun has been in the Premiership since 2005 when he joined West Ham from Racing de Santander. He was a regular for the Hammers but since moving to Liverpool four years ago he has struggled to be a first choice player and doesn't seem to have the right qualities to dominate a Premiership midfield. He has undoubted vision and experience after captaining the Israeli team but he is another player in his twilight years and after releasing two of the best midfielders in the world this summer, perhaps the biggest worry our two new signings ability to play the majority of matches. Still, with our promising young players, Wenger may be able to find a good balance and rotate the squad successfully.
