Capello reveals long term Wilshere concerns
Capello reveals long term Wilshere concerns

The England manager has revealed that the Arsenal midfielder’s current ankle injury was first diagnosed in 2009 but has never been fully cured.

He even took a sly dig at Arsenal by suggesting that he should have had a course of treatment following the last England game of last season rather than being instructed to go on holiday immediately as he allegedly was by Arsenal. Footballers have always played through injury but some people may wonder if the Nasri/Fabregas fiasco put pressure on Wenger to bring Wilshere back to pre-season training as normal despite this ongoing problem.

The mysterious ankle injury is now due for an extended period of rest but if it has not healed sufficiently by mid-October he may have to have supportive pins inserted to help strengthen the ankle which would keep him out until at least December. It is a worryingly similar scenario to the achilles injury that virtually ended Thomas Vermaelen’s season last year. The medical team appear to be unable to cure the injury immediately and are relying on the body’s ability to heal itself to cure an injury that Wilshere has carried for two years.

Hopefully Wilshere can recover but it is an example of how fragile a footballer’s career is and it is also an illustration of how foolish it is to be reliant on one player no matter how good they are. Thankfully new faces were brought in during the summer so no matter how damaging this injury may be to Wilshere, at least the club now have a number of other options.
