Marseille 0-1 Arsenal: Rambo returns to silence doubters
Marseille 0-1 Arsenal: Rambo returns to silence doubters

A commentary team famous for their unswerving bias towards Man Utd were forced to grudgingly aknowledge an impressive Arsenal performance.

‘Handball!’ screamed Andy Townsend, ‘clear handball’ echoed Clive Tyldsley, but no this wasn’t for the obvious handball by a Marseille player in the second half, it was for a cross that may have clipped an Arsenal players arm but there was only inconclusive proof even after video replays. In contrast our penalty appeal was only acknowledged after a series of replays clearly showing the offence.

This was reflective on an abysmal effort from ITV on a big match for Arsenal and a traditionally very challenging place for anyone to play in Europe. No studio and they employed Martin ‘I don’t get one with Wenger’ O’Neill and Roy Keane to offer some impartial thoughts but neither could resist sticking the knife in as they chimed ‘it’s about time Arsenal started doing badly’.

The match didn’t offer much to distract from their inane rambling but for the most part we looked comfortable and it was only sloppy passing from Andre Santos and Alexandre Song in particular that was giving Marseille any hope. Going forward we were struggling to find any fluency and Andrei Arshavin was particularly poor, Roy Keane correct in his assertion that the Russian should have got the hook after ten minutes.

However, we took full control of the game in the second half, eradicated our sloppy mistakes and didn’t give the opposition a sniff. Our attacks were still lacking that illusive end product though as Van Persie and Walcott wasted good opportunities from an inside right position and the game looked to be drifting to a respectable draw. However, the impressive substitutes, Djourou, Gervinho and Ramsey combined to fire an immensely satisfying injury time goal into the Marseille net and spark an almighty ruckus amongst the travelling support.

It was a superb result that confirms our control of arguably the toughest of the Champions League groups and sparks hope that we could finally kick start our season. A win against Stoke on Sunday would put us firmly in the hunt for fourth place and ITV’s doom mongers may soon have to find another club for their vultures to feast on.
