Match Report from soccernet.com

Goals from Matt Murphy and Marc Richards were enough to lift Swansea out of the relegation places as they beat Shrewsbury Town 2-0 at the Vetch.

Richards' strike was his first goal since arriving on loan from Blackburn Rovers last week and it ensured Shrewsbury's first defeat in nine games. It was also only the second time this season that they have failed to score.

Murphy's header just before half-time was his third goal in four games. He rose at the far post to nod home Andrew Mumford's curling free-kick moments after crashing a similar header against the bar.

Richards' goal also came through a header, as he nodded home Murphy's cross to give Swansea their biggest home victory of the season.

By their own standards Shrewsbury were poor and only managed one shot on target in the entire 90 minutes.

Report By Jonathan Russ
A stunning performance from the swans brought 3 much needed points today and saw us go up to 20th in league. 3,638 came to watch and were treated to a excellent display by far the best under Flynn and probably the best this season. Alan Tate and Marc Richards made their home debut's in Flynn's favorite 4-3-3 formation. Lee Jenkins and Jamie Wood missed out through illness which meant Matt Murphy starting up front again with Damien Lacey starting in the middle. The rain poured down as the match started but the swans got off to a flyer. James Thomas tested the Shrewsbury keeper early on to set the tone. Marc Richards goal bound volley was blocked after Murphy had picked him out. Andrew Mumford forced Dunbavin into a great save from his powerful free-kick. Mumford's set piece delivery was causing problems as Smith some how headed wide from point blank range. From another Mumford free-kick Matt Murphy's thunderous header smashed the cross bar. Shrewsbury simply weren't in the game at this point. But as the jacks thought all the good work would come to nothing Murphy headed home from 6 yards after yet another superb delivery from Mumford. The swans left for the dressing to cheers which makes a nice change. Within the first minute of the re-start Howard shot just wide. Shrewsbury only worth while attempt goal came from a shot which looked like it had caught Roger out only to go over. Jason Smith then took an elbow in the face as the game become a bit heated. Smith carried to captain the side for the remaining minutes despite having blood all down his shirt. Thomas then got in down the left and he sent in a low cross which Murphy sent goal bound to force a fantastic save from Dubavin. The second goal wasn't long in coming as Richards headed home a superb Howard cross. The Blackburn's striker's celebration was a delight to see and the goal is what he deserved. The remaining minutes were comfortable and the Jacks left to the tune of "What a beautiful day" ringing in the ears. Player Ratings- Freestone-7-Nothing to do. Howard-7-Decent performance. Up and down the pitch. Smith-9-Faultless all game. Tate-9-Touch and control is class, composed and takes his time on the ball and doesn't apply the Kris O'Leary type of passing which is hitting it hopelessly up field. Great signing. Evans-7-Did his job Mumford-9-Outstanding,Good on the ball and his set piece delivery was first class. Phillips-8-Battled well. Lacey-7-One of his better games today didn't give the ball away as much. Thomas-8-Movement and work rate was excellent. Touch and control much improved. Richards-8-Very impressive.Touch, control and work rate look's good and look's like he is up for a scarp. Murphy-8-proably his best match for us effective up front! It's looking a lot better tonight. Tate and Richards impressed with the return to form of Mumford everything's look's a lot better. Tate looked sheer class ever bit a Man u player and it may worth while getting him for the season. But not to get carried away there's a long way to go but at least there is now light at the end of the tunnel. But we saw passing today, chances created, good defending, movement and most important of all commitment. Now to carry this forward to Exeter in a fortnight. Who are we......?
