Saints V Preston The Verdict
Saints V Preston The Verdict
Sunday, 22nd Feb 2009 22:17

For the first time in ten months Saints won at home on a Saturday.

Make no mistake this was a game Saints needed to win for a variety of reasons and win it they did in fine style.

Mark Wotte made a couple of brave decisions in the starting line up, firstly he used Jason Euell as a striker something that hasnt been tried during Euell's term at the club, despite the fact this is his true position and it paid dividends, secondly he opted to use Simon Gillett and David McGoldrick in the centre of midfield and again this paid dividends, as McGoldrick was able to surge forward but also forced to work hard which he also did, Gillett was neat and tidy and made sure that we got possesion and kept it.

But the real bonus was the way we dispatched a genuine play off contender, in truth they never were allowed to get into the game and even after scoring pretty much out of the blue Saints didnt get jittery but had the confidence to keep the game under their control.

What they have to do now though is repeat this against Cardiff City next week, in truth there is no reason why they shoudnt do so, they have Morgan Scheiderlin back after his suspension to bolster the side, what they need is confidence and they seemed to have got it back for the first time this season, back to back wins wont lift them out of the bottom three but like this result beating the Bluebirds will be a big morale booster, Saints are a far better outfit than they where even a month ago, what they need to do now is prove it.
