Jenkins On Contracts And Transfers

Huw Jenkins has spoken out about contracts and transfers as he tries to lift the Swans into the Premier League

The Swansea City Chairman once again expressed his view that the club would not change their stance on wages and transfers and will continue to work within the budgets that they set themselves despite those being lower than many of their Championship counterparts.

"I think we have to remember where we are in the Championship," he told the Evening Post.

"You have to look at the publicity and media coverage the players get, then think about the clubs in our division with bigger budgets and parachute payments.

"Then you have agents who are looking to line their own pockets.

"They are looking for bigger fees and it doesn't pay them at all to let players stay at a club. They have to keep moving players around.

"That's a fact of life, and our policy of continually finding young, enthusiastic players on their way up the ladder has been the right one.

"We have to look to keep that enthusiasm in the squad to keep our momentum, which is a battle every club faces. Our recruitment policy, of finding the right new players, is in most cases more important than keeping existing ones.

"The moment we change our policy and take our eye off the ball by putting all our eggs in one basket is the moment we lose all the positives and gains we have made over the past 10 years

"We would then start to go down the route taken by a few other clubs, who have struggled because of the decisions they have made.

"We want to sort out new contracts with one or two players, but only if they want to stay with us.

"They know our structure and our policies and they have to accept them.

"The players play in a good stadium, they get their wages paid every week and they were never forced to sign their contracts in the first place.

"If they don't want to remain at the club when their contracts end, we have shown in the past that we are professional enough to deal with that.

"There will be no hard feelings. All we would ask is that anybody on our books, wherever they might end up playing next season, gives our club 100 per cent this year and then we will see where that takes us.

"It has been difficult because of the change in managers and the uncertainty those changes bring," he added.

"Let's hope that whatever happens this season, we will have Brendan here for a few years and we can build things season after season."
