Can Saints Still Get Promotion
Can Saints Still Get Promotion

Is it still possible for Saints to get that coveted sixth spot.

The answer is of course yes, but the chances get slimmer by the day.

AT present Saints have 37 points from 29 games, although technically its 47 so not too much cane be read into a points per game ratio, this means that if they won every one of their remaining 17 games they would finish on 88 points, as has often been said 75 points is normally the average for the last play off spot.

This means that Saints really have to win around about 12 of their remaining fixtures and draw another 3, meaning that in reality they can afford no more than 2 defeats, although that sounds a tall order, if you take into account that Saints lost 3 out of the first 10, that means we have only lost 3 out of the last 19 so defeat wise its about par, but we have to improve our win ratio.

But its starting to look like 75 points will be a low total this year, Huddersfield in sixth have 54 points from 31 games an average of 1.75points per game, if they keep that up they will reach 80 points and to be blunt thats a tall order for Saints, nigh impossible some might say.

So all Saints can do at this stage is keep winning, get six points out of the two games in hand and then beat Huddersfield at SMS, if they can do that then there is a chance they could overhaul the Yorkshire side.

Unfortunately though we have dropped far too many silly points including the three away games at Millwall, Brentford & Exeter, all games we should have lead in and all games we should have been capable of winning, things are now so tight that even an extra two points from those games would give us some breathing space.

If we dont get promotion its not a disaster but it will be disapointing, some might say that we had to overcome the ten point deficit plus a slow start, but I dont subscribe to that view, we had overcame those hurdles back in December when we pulled within seven points of a play off spot, if we fail to get promotion it is because of the five away games at Leeds, Colchester, Millwall, Brentford & Exeter where we got 3 points out of 18, thats where promotion was perhaps lost, as we allowed Huddersfield to pull away from us and widen the gap by ten points.
