Clever Wenger Gives FIFA Food for Thought
Clever Wenger Gives FIFA Food for Thought

There are those that believe the manager is wasted in his role as a football manager and his latest suggestion gives added evidence to that argument.

Instead of blindly joining in the chorus for video evidence to be used during a match like the majority of the football world, Wenger has offered an alternative solution to the problem highlighted by Henry’s controversial intervention in last week’s Wrold Cup playoffs.

Instead of stopping play and checking the video, Wenger has gone for a more retrospective method. If the Henry incident is used as an example, Wenger would have wanted the referee to ask Henry whether he had handled the ball. If he had said ‘yes’ then the goal would have been disallowed. If he had said ‘no’ and was then later found to be lying by video evidence then FIFA could throw the book at him, banning him for ten matches minimum and his reputation would be left in pieces. This solution makes sense and would conclusively solve the problem of handballs.

Other contentious issues such as diving would be more difficult to sort out as they can often be misinterpreted. A player may look like he is diving but could instead just be protecting himself. It is a grey area that no amount of video technology can solve and so we should not assume that technology alone can solve every incorrect decision made by officials.
