Saints Pass Half A Million Mark In Attendances

Saints are about to pass an important milestone in this seasons attendances when they play Doncaster at St Mary's stadium on Saturday, a statistic that only five Championship Clubs will definately achieve this season.

So far this season 481,441 fans have passed through the gates at St Mary's in the Championship, giving Saints the third highest average in the division behind Derby County in second and West Ham in first place.

So when they entertain Doncaster Rovers on Saturday the total number of spectators who have watched Saints at home will surge past the half million mark with three home games still remaining, a tremendous feat.

To put this in perspective as mentioned earlier only five clubs are virtually certain of doing this, as added to the top three, Leeds & Leicester unless their gates dropped to around the 15k mark in their last four games will just about do it by seasons end.

Cardiff & Nottingham Forest are in with a shout of doing so, if you take 500k equals an average of 21,739 both are just above that mark at present, Cardiff on 22,077 and Forest on 21,763, given that both have a lot to play for in the next month or so, I would expect them to get past this landmark half million figure.

Looking Eastwards, some 18 miles to be exact Pompey currently have an average of 14, 829 from their 18 home games, meaning that so far 266,922 have "packed the park" although their paltry attendance for the visit of Birmingham of only just over 12k means that if they continue to turn up with that sort of numbers they will struggle to get past 330,000 for their grand total, only a short way over half of the numbers that will have watched our good selves.

Can we overhaul Derby County and be the second best supported team in the division ?the answer is that it is possible but it will be tight, if Derby maintain their average then 601,726 will have passed through their gates come the end of the season, if we take our current total and add four 30k home gates to it, then we have a figure of 601,441, so you can see how tight it would be, but the answer is as long as Derby dont get gates above their average and we get 30k with a couple above that, then its quite possible that we might be able to do so, the Hammers average of 30,500 will be a bridge too far though, however with West Ham away at Burnley on Saturday, Saints and derby will have the honour of getting to the magical half million figure before the East London club
