1. Saints V Newcastle The Dell Sunday 24th October 1993.
This was a pivotal moment in Saints history, it was the day when Saints supporters showed that it is supporters that matter and that without them a football club is nothing.
This game was scheduled for live Sunday showing on Sky TV and the fledgling Southampton Independent Supporters Association was out to show it had the backing of the fans, pre game there were protests against Ian Branfoot and despite a great win they continued long after the kick off.
But the action on the pitch had as much drama, Saints had only won 1 and drawn 2 of their previous 11 games and weren't bottom courtesy only of very poor Swindon side, the fans were not happy with Branfoot, not just for the results but for his treatment of club God Matt Le Tissier who had been dropped for the past three games.
It was all set for a Le God magic moment and it was rumoured that Branfoot was about to haul Le Tissier off just after the hour mark when he scored what for a normal player would be a wonder goal, but for him pretty much a standard.
Newcastle equalised with 18 minutes to go but in the final minute Matt struck again controlling the ball on his thigh and in one movement volleying it over Hooper in the Toon goal for a 20 yard winner, One of those magic moments you had to be there.
2. Saints V Newcastle The Dell Wednesday 22nd March 1995.
Almost 18 months on and although Branfoot had gone and Alan Ball had started this season like a train, Saints went into this one on a 12 game winless run which had seen them drop from the top 10 to the relegation zone.
When the game entered its final minutes Saints were still trailing to a Kitson 18th minute goal and things looked bleak, then things went mad, firstly Neil Heaney prodded home after Srnicek spilled Gordon Watson's header, then on 90 minutes Watson himself prodded home after the keeper dropped Jason Dodd's cross and virtually from the restart Neil Shipperley made it 3-1 after another fumble from Srnicek.
In the space of a few minutes Newcastle had gone from a comfortable win to disaster.
3. Saints V Newcastle Saturday 18th January 1997
The 1990's had some classic encounters at the Dell and after Clark scored on 83 minutes to put the Toon 2-0 up they looked set for their first win at the Dell in 25 years, however in the final minute another Neil, this time Maddison and another goalkeeping error this time Hislop, reduced the arrears, then in injury time Matthew Le Tissier again did what he did best and smashed in a 25 yard blockbuster to rescue a point,
4. Saints V Newcastle Sunday 15th August 1999
If Newcastle thought they were going to end the Millenium by finally winning at the Dell they were to be sadly mistaken although they were leading at half time courtesy of a goal by ex Saint Alan Shearer from the penalty spot.
But if they thought they were going to finally lay their jinx they were to be mistaken, Hassan Kachloul equalised just before the hour mark after Saints misfit Stuart Ripley on as a sub beat his man got to the line and crossed hard and low.
It was now to be the Ripley show and on 66 mins it was a Ripley pass that gave Marian Pahars the chance to put Saints ahead, Newcastle were being torn apart by Ripley and it made space for others, 3 mins later and Kachloul scored again after debutant Trond Soltvedt knocked down a long Scott Hiley ball.
Saints scoring was completed with 10 mins to go when Mark Hughes set up by Soltvedt thundered in a 20 yard trademark (well for Chelsea and Man Utd) volley, although the Geordies would pull one back to make it 4-2 they were never back in the game and all agreed that Stuart Ripley had changed the game, sadly it didn't really change his Sants career and this was as good as it got.
5. Newcastle V Saints Saturday 22nd January 1994.
It wasn't just at home Saints beat Newcastle and although we got a few drubbings at St James Park, it was also probably a ground we got a result more times than most other grounds back then.
Perhaps the best result in the 90's was back in January 1994, Saints travelled to St James Park with no official supporters in the ground, originally a local entrepreneur had organised a plane trip to the North East but this was scuppered when Newcastle decided to start their ground re development early and not offer club's any away tickets for the rest of the season.
A few Saints fans were present in the ground having secured tickets in the home end but the only others watching were gathered in the Hulse Road Social Club were around 1,200 fans watched it on a satellite screening.
The game suddenly had big significance as it was the first in charge for new manager Alan Ball who took his seat wearing his trademark flat cap.
The assembled masses in Hulse Road went mad after only 5 minutes when Neil Madison headed home to virtual silence in the ground itself.
That all changed 7 mins before the break when Andy Cole equalised and it stayed at 1-1 as the game headed into the final period.
Saints had weathered the storm when on 83 minutes they won a free kick just outside the area, up stepped that man Le Tissier who thumped home the ball with such ferocity that Hooper in the home goal remained rooted to the spot so much so that those in the Hulse Road struggled to work out if it as actually a goal or the referee had held up play and the kick would be retaken.
The pictures of celebrating Saints players confirmed it was a goal and Saints saw out the final minutes to register a much needed win and indeed their first away win of the season.
