?

What does all this mean?

Do like that picture of a load of people chasing a Fray Bentos down a hill. Is that Sam Allardyce leading? Ha. That does describe the English quite well.

Phil owns (owned, dunno if he still does) a nightclub in Falmouth where my folks live. Shades it might be called? Went there once, we got into a fight (fear not, it was a glorious one sided victory and it was their fault. Touring Aussie rugby players misbehaving, but we had some SBS ringers). Up on the market-on-the-moor. A good local Pasty shop opposite on the moor, Charlie Choak's. Nice little town, Falmouth. I believe i'm correct in saying it's the world's third deepest natural harbour, possibly behind Sydney and Tokyo.

That anecdote was one hell of a rollercoaster!

I always thought Falmouth was the second deepest natural harbour after Sydney which made it an ideal place for American battleships to refuel during WWII which led to the town being knocking shop central during the 40s. As told to me by a local historian.

Anyway here's Gerry again.

I come from Castletownbere, Co. Cork and live in Cork City, both of which are definitely the second deepest harbours in the world. Both of them. Neighbours have told me.

Which is handy. Because we go swimming the odd time.

Any questions?

The Firstcut is the deepest.

there's nothing natural about Cork.

Ramsey's harbour is deeper, there was a fishing boat AND a seal there the other day. AT THE SAME TIME.

Intrigued by the question I used the internet to investigate what indeed was the world's deepest natural harbour - isn't that what the internet's for after all. So after examining countless pictures of natural harbours (and some shaved ones too) and reading different accounts I'm none the wiser.

People generally interchange deepest with largest and biggest and no ones quite sure how to measure it. Many places, Falmouth, Cork, Milford Haven in Wales, Poole in Dorset, Pearl, Clyde, Mahon in Minorca, and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, claim to be the second or third deepest,
especially when they're hosting an international sailing event. Only Sydney claims to be the deepest (or do they the mean the largest) but some argue that Rio, Hobart, and Halifax, Nova Scotia are all deeper. It's a deep question. Falmouth certainly has one of the smallest pubs I've been in. By the bus-stop. A wardrobe with a serving hatch. Three people max could fit in there. At least I think it was a pub (edit: uh-oh - last remaining war-time knocking shop?) I hope it's still in business. Does anyone have any more Cold War Steve?
