Opinion Polls 08:48 - Jan 15 with 2529 viewsMrSheen

We're forever hearing how polls reveal that the people want/demand/fear x/y/z. I've got to 54 without ever being asked to contribute to one of these divinations of the will of the people. Has anyone else ever got involved?

Once. Virgin Trains asked us if we'd like to be able to use our loyalty points for a wider range of stuff than just free train tickets. Quite a few people said yes so they ditched the loyalty programme altogether and replaced it with Nectar Points. You used to be able to get a return train ticket anywhere on the East Coast for free for every £250 you spent. Now £250 spend gets you a free sandwich at Sainsburys.

You can make an opinion poll say anything you want if you ask the right questions....

Some rare agreement between us Sheen.

Labour supporters particularly bad at this. Every time a poll comes out with Labour in the lead Social Media goes bananas. I always think it best to take it with a pinch of salt considering Brexit, the 2015 & 2017 general elections

That said, YouGov had Nadhim Zawahi as its CEO for 5 years so impartiality of these companies can be questioned. Most are funded by think tanks.

I was wondering if it was just me. I've never been asked to do jury service either, while my daughter was on one before her 20th Birthday.

My Mum used to sit on market research panels in the 70s. We got the odd free biscuit out of it, but perhaps she got me blacklisted.

First time ever last summer, on a P&O cross-channel ferry. Got asked where we'd been, purpose of trip etc. Market research rather than an opinion poll.

Was sharing a flat with a mate some years back and we got a call on the landline from Ipsos Mori asking about opinions on past prime ministers. My mate felt that rather than be honest, he would just bang on about how John Major was Britains best 20th century Prime Minister instead.

I told a You Gov caller that I voted Communist Party of Great Britain, when really I voted for the Socialist Workers Party. Mugs.

I got telephoned once.

The ironic thing was that the poll was commissioned by.... me.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

I've done about half a dozen questionnaires for Amazon Prime tv shows - usually get a £5 or £10 gift card each time

In a previous career, Mrs Boston was in the Market Research business. She quite enjoyed the work but it was seriously heavy going, so often allowed me to er help her out. Nothing I enjoyed more than taking the preferred answer then coming up with the questions that would produce the required result, or comprising a survey on what appeared to be on one subject and was really about something else , all without the respondents knowing of course. It amused me because I’m a boring c nut.
PS....for a leading research company just outside of London with many of Britain’s major brand names on its books.
