just got back from a holiday in the States. Me and the wife got a bit homesick after about a week and decided to have a meal (and a few drinks) in an Irish pub. Wifey spots Shepherds Pie on the menu but gets a bit confused when 'biscuit' is mentioned in the ingredients. Waiter has to explain that it has a pastry base with savoury mince and mashed potatoes on top. "I'll have the lamb stew thanks" she replied! Biscuit in a shepherds pie....biscuit???

Dunno where you were but in New England a biscuit usually refers to a small light highly absorbent bread roll. It’s a name / description that has remained in use around here even as biscuits became more varied in style and production. Biscuits and gravy was a common meal for the lower orders back in the day.
