Blackpool players must take the blame for Simon Grayson's sacking, says James Husband

James Husband says the Blackpool players must accept responsibility for Simon Grayon’s sacking.

The 50-year-old was relieved of his duties last week after overseeing a run of just one win in 12 games, bringing an end to his second spell at Bloomfield Road after just seven months in the managerial hotseat.

Grayson’s former first-team coach David Dunn took charge of his first fixture as caretaker boss on Saturday, 10-man Pool going down to a harsh 2-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers.

Dunn will continue to take care of training ahead of Saturday’s trip to AFC Wimbledon while the club ups its search for a new permanent boss.

Husband, speaking after Saturday’s latest disappointment at the Memorial Stadium, admits it’s been a tough week for the players.

“It is disruptive, but make no qualms about it we’ve got to take responsibility for what has happened,” the defender said.

“It’s not nice when people lose their job, especially when it’s a manager that has brought me in as well.

“But football is a revolving door which just goes on and on and on, so we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to pick ourselves up and go again.

“We’re trying to do everything possible. We had the chances to put the game to bed on Saturday but sooner or later it has to change.

“If we grind out performances anywhere near the level of Saturday, we’ll win more games than we lose between now and the end of the season.”

The Seasiders appeared to be on course for their first away win in five months on Saturday when Gary Madine handed them a second minute lead.

Dunn’s charges were will in control of proceedings until the stroke of half-time, when Ben Heneghan was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Jonson Clarke-Harris by the touchline.

Even with a man down, Pool had the chances to extend their lead but they were eventually pegged back on 73 minutes, when centre back Alfie Kilgour produced a wonder strike into the top corner from 30 yards.

Bristol Rovers then snatched the three points six minutes from time when Preston North End loanee Josh Ginnelly inadvertently diverted a long-range strike into the back of the net.

“This one is a tough one to take,” Husband added.

“It’s been a tough week for us but to a man out there I can’t fault a single one of us.

“They’ve just scored one goal where their centre half has scored one from 40 yards and then the second one is a deflection.

“When it goes against you, it goes against you.

“But the game plan, up until the sending off, had worked. We worked on it at the end of the week and to a man, as I said, we did what we really wanted to do.

“It’s just one of them where we’ve had enough chances to put the game to bed but we’ll learn from it.

“I’m proud of the boys, they rolled their sleeves up through a tough week and put in a performance worthy of all the supporters that came.”
