Is there any future for the human race.

Look at the world today, from world leaders, heads of industry and commerce to footballers who influence our youth.

All the wealth but not an ounce of compassion or common sense between them.

I am hoping that one of the consequences of the current crisis is that people will actually start to think about things like this ; for too long, I think our "elite" (however you define it) have had far too easy a ride.

There are quite a few people and institutions who haven't come out of this well, either because they have been stupid and venal, or had to be shamed into doing the right thing, or in some cases both.

When you contrast it to the quiet heroism of the people who are actually saving g lives every day it makes you wonder about our values, whether we should let the market determine value in all walks of life and a myriad of other things.

What I am certain of is that we will have to completely overhaul how we do emergency planning in the future, including how we resource it. We are going to have to have an adult conversation about what is the real level of tax revenue you NEED to to maintain a modern, first-world infrastructure, and how we give people real incentives to go into a good few professions that are currently unglamorous or relatively modestly paid.

Sorry, that was a bit of a digression from the original question.

There definitely needs to be changes for sure.

It’s finding a way of presenting and implementing those changes and and a vehicle smart enough and powerful enough to do that without chaos . Anarchy isn’t attractive yet mainstream party politics won’t achieve it either in my opinion.

And sadly you can’t rely on the morality of every individual to make that transition naturally.
We’ve cocked up too many generations for too long in different ways to hope for that.

Agree, however too many very powerful vested interests in wanting the status quo to return.

‘Where there is harmony, may we bring discord. Where there is truth, may we bring error. Where there is faith, may we bring doubt. And where there is hope, may we bring despair’

I'd say that thinking any chages for the better will come out of this is pie in the sky.

Society has got the way it is because socio / cultural influences have lead it to a natural settling point.

Nowadays, if the average person works seriously enough they will accrue a certain amount of material wealth and hence, be able to live in a style which would have been unheard of for an average person 50 years ago.

This breeds a selfish mentality of protecting one's lot at the expense of the collective good.

Every man for himself!!!

"The evil that is in the world comes out of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence, if they lack understanding. On the whole, men are more good than bad; that, however, isn't the real point. But they are more or less ignorant, and it is this that we call vice or virtue".
