Norman Lamont, once he had gotten over the shock of a Conservative chancellor shaking the fabled magic money tree, gives his support to Sunak`s measures today.
Whilst I probably won`t be taking him up on a discounted meal, his other business measures have certainly been gratefully received.
You can quibble about some of it, but all in all, he appears to be making a decent fist of a very difficult situation, and he does it without too much fuss and obfuscation.
A good apple in a rather rotten barrel...

Thought the discounted meal was a bit gimmicky, lots of places already did/do that offer midweek anyway.
Will the VAT cut be passed on, or just pocketed by businesses? (VAT on certain goods is a joke anyway)
Would have liked him to have made the £1000 payable to employers for keeping furloughed staff after 12 months, rather than January. Depending on what are final agreement with the EU is, I can see January being messy, and after getting the £1k per employee just using Brexit as an excuse to let staff go.
But yes, all help must be applauded, and gratefully accepted, but there is a danger of creating a demand bubble that can't be sustained, especially with the global/local supply chain/trade so dislocated at the moment. | |

Yep, agree with that Red. Some of it is certainly open to abuse, and designed in part to get us through the Xmas period without catastrophic and moral sapping redundancies, rather than looking too far into the future.
But everything is dependant on whether there is a second wave in the Autumn (as widely anticipated by hospital staff), or whether the clever people find a vaccine in the next 9 months... | | | |
