BEZ LUBALA MAKES BLACKPOOL SWITCH

Lubala leaves the Reds after one year.

Crawley Town Football Club can announce a deal has been agreed with Blackpool for the permanent signing of Bez Lubala for an undisclosed fee.

Lubala spent one season with the Red Devils following his transfer from Birmingham last year. During his short spell in the South East, Lubala played on 41 different occasions for the Reds in which he netted 13 goals and recorded 3 assists. His first goal came on his competitive debut for the club, on the opening day of the season away at Carlisle.

Lubala played a part in the Reds historic Carabao Cup campaign netting the only goal to sink Norwich City in a 1-0 victory and then converting his penalty against Stoke City in the third round shootout.

Technical Director Erdem Konyar said: “We thank Bez for his service to the club. We wish the best for the future. The departures of Panutche and Bez to the level above underline the positive development of younger players.”

Everyone at Crawley Town Football Club would like to thank Bez Lubala for his services to the club and wish him all the best for the future.

Lubala Joins Blackpool

Blackpool FC is pleased to announce the signing of Bez Lubala for an undisclosed fee from Crawley Town.

Lubala, 22, joins the Seasiders on a three year deal with the Club holding an option for a further year.

The Congolese forward signed for League Two side Crawley Town last summer where he impressed in scoring 13 goals in all competitions, including the winning goal over Norwich City in the Carabao Cup in August 2019.

Prior to his move to Crawley, Lubala spent five years at Birmingham City, progressing through the youth setup to make four first team appearances for the Blues.

On his move to Blackpool, Lubala said:

“It feels great to have signed and I can’t wait to get started.

“The passionate support that this Club has was one of the key reasons I joined. There seems to be a real buzz around here at the moment and that was a big factor in my decision.

“The Club really wants to push forward and has a real vision for where they want to go. I’m looking forward to playing my part and seeing how far we can all go.”

Neil Critchley said:

“Bez is someone who we have been aware of for some time who we feel will be a fantastic asset to the football club.

“He’s an example of the type of player we’re looking to bring to the Club — hungry, ambitious and has a great attitude towards the game.

“Bez impressed last season with his goals and assists at Crawley, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in tangerine over the next few years.”

A Sheffield Wednesday profile of Lubala from November 2019:

Who is Bez Lubala? Five things Sheffield Wednesday fans should know about prolific ex-Birmingham winger linked with January Owls transfer

Sheffield Wednesday are ‘leading the chase’ for the former Birmingham City winger Beryly ‘Bez’ Lubala, according to Teamtalk.

But what do Owls fans need to know about their rumoured target, for whom it is claimed they ‘exploring the possibility of a January swoop’?

SWN takes a look below…
He made debut under the current Sheffield Wednesday manager at Birmingham…

Garry Monk gave Lubala a 21-minute run-out at Bristol City in April 2018 — little over a month after he took charge of the Blues. The DR Congo-born Leicester-raised player appeared on four further occasions for Birmingham, all under Monk.
But he later rejected Birmingham’s offer to sign for Crawley…

And it was another ex-Birmingham staff member, Gabriele Cioffi, who profited. Cioffi was part of the Gianfranco Zola regime at St Andrew’s, before being named Crawley manager in September 2018. Birmingham inserted a sell-on clause into the deal for Lubala and will be due a percentage of any sale made by Crawley.
He has played most of his football for Crawley on the left of midfield…

But he has occupied a variety of attacking roles throughout his career, including centre forward. That goes some way to explaining his goalscoring record of eight in 19 games for Crawley. According to WhoScored.com, Lubala’s strengths are finishing, long shots, direct free-kicks and dribbling.

He is said to have caught the eye of Premier League and Championship clubs this season…

According to Teamtalk, Middlesbrough, Wigan Atheltic and Peterborough United have all watched Lubala in recent weeks. And The Daily Mail reported earlier this year that even clubs at the top of England’s game are paying attention. The 21-year-old scored the winner against one of them, Norwich City, in the League Cup back in August.
He is under contract until 2021 at Crawley…

And the League Two side hold a one-year extension option. It leaves them in a strong negotiating position should Sheffield Wednesday (or anyone else for that matter) opt to pursue their apparent interest. Lubala is represented by Sturridge Sports Management, the agency run by Dean Sturridge — the uncle of the former England striker, Daniel, and an ex-player himself.

Diamonds in the Rough: Bez Lubala

Beryly “Bez” Lubala is a 22-year old right-footed winger who primarily operates from the left. Lubala came through the youth ranks at Birmingham City, making his Championship debut in a 20 minute cameo against Bristol City in the 17/18 season. After making just 3 appearances in the Championship last year (all of them as an injury time sub), Lubala left St. Andrews on a free transfer in the summer of 2019 and joined Crawley Town.

His first full season as a senior pro was going well until, you know, the world started collapsing around us, with 12 goals and 3 assists in his 34 League Two games for a mediocre Crawley side.
The Numbers

Shots

To put it bluntly, Bez Lubala is a shot monster. His 4.5 shots per 90 is highest of anyone in the league by miles (Shay McCarten of Bradford is 2nd place with 3.7) and only Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Agßero average more (4.6 per 90) in the top 4 divisions of English football (minimum of 1000 mins played).

He’s had 16 games where he’s attempted 5 or more shots, including a match where he put up a whopping 8 against Salford at home.

That truly impressive volume comes at the expense of some quality, though – 2.5 of Lubala’s shots originate from outside the box (2nd highest – McCarten = 2.9), with only 0.1 shots per 90 coming inside the 6-yard box.

When you’re letting fly from long range at the rate that Bez does, it’s only natural that your accuracy is going to suffer a bit. That’s borne out in the numbers, with his 1.9 shots on target per 90 representing a shot accuracy of a little over 40%. Lubala’s shots miss the target 1.1 times per 90, while 1.6* blocked are blocked, suggesting that he often shoots in situations with lots of bodies in front of him, highlighting the need to improve his shot selection.

*(For some reason WhoScored’s rounding means that these add up to 4.6 shots per 90, whereas his pure shot tally is registered as 4.5.)

His shot numbers make him seem like a heavily one-footed player – 3.5 right foot, 0.9 left foot, 0.2 head – but that’s slightly deceptive. When you watch footage of him, he’s a strong striker of the ball with his left when it comes to both shots and crosses.

Lubala understandably gets the bulk of his shots from open play (3.4), but also weighs in with a healthy 0.9 set piece shots, mostly coming from direct free-kicks and penalties.

Dribbles

For all of these figures, it’s important to consider them within the context of team performance. Crawley’s average possession is 47.7%, 21st in the league (or 4th lowest if you prefer), meaning that Lubala is putting up these numbers in a side who have a much lower proportion of the ball relative to the rest of the league. Lubala’s shooting volume obviously contributes to that low possession % as it creates turnovers, but even so, he’s using the relatively low number of passes he receives in a productive way.

When it comes to running with the ball at his feet, he puts up 1.8 successful dribbles per 90 (19th highest in League Two) out of 2.3 total attempted (35th) and gets dispossessed 3.2 times per 90 (highest among wide players, 7th overall (but 4 of those have played <1000 mins)). Much like with his shooting, Lubala is a player who is willing to try to make things happen, even if he’s not especially efficient.

The fact that he’s fouled by other players 1.6 times per 90 (6th among wingers), underscores how integral to his team’s attack he is and how difficult it is for opposition defenders to handle him within the laws of the game.

Passing

Again, this needs to be framed by how little of the ball Crawley have on average. Despite that, Lubala produces 2 key passes per 90(22nd highest), of which 0.5 are crosses and 0.4 corners. He’s a player who is obviously effective at creating from wide areas but his general productivity is impressive when you factor in just how often he’s on the end of shots, too.

Lubala passes the ball an average of 23.1 times per 90, rating 13th among wide players, so he’s plenty involved in possession, too.

Quantity is one thing, but quality is another. Lubala doesn’t rate too badly either when the quality of the chances he creates and takes are factored in:

As this plot of xG+xA plotted against passes into the penalty area demonstrates, Lubala is a triple threat contributor: someone who creates high quality chances, accumulates high xG through his shot volume, and progresses the ball into the box with his passing. He’s starting, creating, and finishing moves at a high standard in League Two.
Defending

The flip side of Crawley’s low average possession is that, given their players have much less of the ball, they spend more time defending and have more opportunities to attempt tackles, interceptions etc. As a result, Lubala’s defensive event data should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Bez sticks in 2.7 attempted tackles per 90 (3rd among wide players), but only completes 1.4 of them, meaning there’s a roughly 50—50 chance he wins a tackle. That’s reflected in the number of fouls he gives away – 1.7 fouls per 90 (again, 3rd most) suggests that he’s a bit sloppy when it comes to winning the ball back.

Additionally, he contests 3.4 aerial duels per 90 (8th highest among wingers) – a reflection of Crawley’s passing style more than anything else, perhaps – but only wins 1.2 of them (good enough for 9th best).
In Possession

A look at the shot maps from some of Lubala’s especially high volume shooting matches reveal some intriguing things about his game. Take for instance, the 8-shot Salford match:

There a lot more analysis of him in the article but it can't really be copied and pasted. Here's the link:

Pre-season has shown one of Critchley's main attacking principles is a right footer on the left and vice versa for the other side.

I found it interesting and so looked around on the internet and read up a bit about it. Why would he want to play that way? The advantages?

A couple of the pointers I found interesting:

The players who find themselves wider than the others aren't 'wingers' that we've always known. Rather they offer a wide attacking threat.

Obviously, they cut in toward the centre. This isn't only, although it's a very nice option, so they can have a pop at goal on their good foot. It's also because this compresses play so that all our attackers are together in the middle band of the pitch. In theory, we'll have a numerical advantage, in this zone when our lads 'cut in'.

This favourable numerical situation leads to a few advantages.

When on the ball all the attackers are in proximity, we'll hopefully have at least as many attackers won't be stranded alone in the middle of a lorry load of defenders, they'll have plenty of colleagues and options and this'll offer opportunities for quick give and go passing while running at pace.

Also, if we lose the ball, the players are all in proximity for pressing in numbers as one complete unit to quickly regain possession (they reckon within 6-7 seconds).

It make us more of a compact solid block and therefore stronger defensively from the front right through to the back.

I've been reading up on bits and bats like this over the last 2 or 3 weeks. It's intriguing, trying to figure out the way Critchley wants to play. Don't forget, there's as much, even more, chance of me being wrong than right!

Now we know.

Interesting to find out that the alleged incident happened 1 year before we signed Lubala:

Blackpool FC footballer Beryly Lubala in court accused of raping teenager

Lubala is accused of raping a teenager after inviting her over to watch Netflix. He denies the charge.

A Blackpool FC footballer has denied raping a teenager after inviting her over to 'Netflix and chill'.

Beryly 'Bez' Lubala, 24, grabbed the 18-year-old by the hair, telling her to stop making noise and be a good girl before raping her, a court heard.

The woman, now aged 20, told police she made it clear she did not want sex with the player in several text messages before driving to his home in Horsham near Crawley, West Sussex.

She told the court: "I said no and he carried on. He turned into a different person. There was no kind of listening to what I did and didn't want."

"It was just like a stranger," the woman told Sussex Police.

Lubala was attracting attention from Championship and Premier League scouts after joining Crawley Town from Birmingham City when the woman said she was attacked in September 2019.

A jury in Brighton heard the striker, who joined Championship side Blackpool a year later, had sex with the teenager on two occasions before she visited him at his home. The court heard the woman slept with the player twice before beginning a relationship with another woman.

Once in a hotel on the day he arrived in Crawley and again in a house he was sharing with other young players.

She blocked him from her social media while she was dating the woman.

After the relationship ended, the player contacted her again by text message.

The jury heard the player told her he only wanted to watch Netflix and chill before she agreed to visit him a third time. Emotional voice messages recorded as the woman left drove herself home were played to the jury.

Richard Hearnden for the Crown told the jury they could hear the woman say she felt violated in the raw, unfiltered account. The teenager could be heard crying as she recorded the messages.

"I drove up to my friends house," she said.

"We've been friends for ages. We have slept together in the past.

"We were just chilling and it just happened and I didn't want him to. I told him I didn't want him to. I'm just driving home in the dark, I can't stop crying."

Mr Hearnden told the court: "She wasn't raped by a stranger or outdoors or in the street or in an alleyway. She was raped by a man she knew, in his house. She wasn't in a relationship with the man but they had been intimate before."

Beryly Lubala denies raping the young woman at his home in Horsham on September 13, 2019.

The trial at Lewes Crown Court in Brighton continues.

Club Statement: Beryly Lubala

Blackpool Football Club notes the Jury reached a verdict of not guilty in relation to the allegation against Beryly Lubala.

This has been an extremely difficult time for all involved.

The alleged offence is one that the Club had no prior knowledge of when Beryly signed for Blackpool in September 2020.

The Club would like to make clear that it would not knowingly sign a footballer, nor employ any individual, who is subject to a Police Investigation of this gravity.

The Club will be making no further comment at this stage.
