Hashtag United Football Club was formed in March 2016 by Spencer Owen, a football YouTuber who went by the name Spencer FC. Owen had begun making YouTube videos in 2013 as a student at the University of Reading, and the team initially consisted of friends from school and university.

From their foundation, the team primarily played five, seven and eleven-a-side exhibition matches, which were filmed and uploaded to their YouTube channel. By September 2016, the team's Instagram account had over 100,000 followers, their Twitter account 41,000, and a 'penalty challenge' video uploaded to YouTube had accumulated over one million views.

Hashtag United played various teams including a Comedians XI whom they beat 19—1, Google, the GB Deaf Team, Barawa and a Manchester City staff team, with opponents fielding former professional footballers such as Paul Dickov, Graeme Le Saux and Ray Parlour, and celebrities including Omid Djalili. At one point in 2016, the club was rumoured to be interested in signing professional footballer Adebayo Akinfenwa.

In 2017 the club won the EE Wembley Cup, a competition that Owen had created in 2015. The team included Scott Pollock, who went on to sign professional terms with Northampton Town.

Ahead of the 2018—19 season, the club joined the English football league system, initially being placed in Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League, before being moved to the Eastern Senior League after appealing that it was more suited to their Essex roots. After joining the pyramid, Spencer Owen stepped down as manager and was replaced by former East Thurrock United assistant manager Jay Devereux.

Their first competitive match was a 3—2 away loss to Little Oakley on 4 August 2018. The club's first league season saw them reach the semi-finals of Division One Knock-Out Cup. They went on to win the Division One South title, earning promotion to the Essex Senior League. The 2019—20 season was abandoned due to the coronavirus pandemic with the club second in the league, a point behind the leaders and with three matches in hand.

If the YouTuber owner is serious about Hashtag, I can see them flying through the leagues.

Shirts sponsored by Football Manager and ground adverts for Adidas and Lucozade Sport, makes a change from the usual local Spud the builder and Robbie the Fishmonger adverts at that level.

LANCASTER CITY MATCH PREVIEW

Runcorn Town's FA Cup run continues on Tuesday night, when we make the journey up the M6 to face Lancaster City. Our paths have never crossed before, so we are looking forward to this first meeting with the Dolly Blues.

Lancaster are well established in the Northern Premier League and have been in the Premier Division for the last 3 seasons after winning Division 1 North in 2017. The gap of two divisions between the clubs makes it another tough challenge for Town, but the team are high on confidence and will relish the chance of causing another upset.

Lancaster have twice reached the 2nd Round Proper in the FA Cup - in 1947 and 1973 - and more recently reached the 1st Round Proper, losing to Cambridge United in 2005 and Milton Keynes Dons in 2005.

We go into the game on good form having beaten Thackley in the Extra Preliminary Round and Brighouse Town in the Preliminary Round as well as reaching the Macron Cup Final. Lancaster's season started a little later and they have only had one competitive game so far - a 1-1 draw against Stalybridge Celtic in their opening league game.

Town Manager Paul McManus will be without midfielder Joe Holt who is suspended after being sent off in the previous round, but otherwise the squad should be at full strength.

"We’re really looking forward to Tuesday night - it’s always good playing higher league opposition, as it gives us a good look at what we need to improve on to get to that level ourselves.

Also a great opportunity for the squad to show their qualities and hopefully perform to their top level to give us a chance at progression again in the FA Cup, which is the main aim for myself and the management.

If we win on Tuesday we will have matched last seasons achievement in the competition. We will always aim to beat previous seasons to show how we are progressing.

It’s another big test for us and one we can’t wait for."

The game will not be all ticket and fans can pay at the stadium on the day should they wish. However to make life easier for all concerned, supporters are asked to purchase a ticket in advance via the Lancaster City website in advance of the game. Prices are as follows...

Adults - £10.00
Concessions - £6.00
Students - £5.00
Under 14s - Free (although a ticket is still required)

Tickets can be purchased up until 4pm on matchday via this link - https://lancastercityfc.ktckts.com/event/lan2021h01/lancaster-city-fc-v-runcorn-

You will be required to register before making a purchase and tickets will be sent to you via e-mail for you to print or show on your mobile phone at the turnstile.

Lancaster have provided some frequently asked questions here in case you have any queries regarding the ticketing website - https://lancastercityfc.ktckts.com/frequentlyaskedquestions

Kick off at the Giant Axe Stadium is 7:45pm and the tie will be settled by penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes. It is not possible for the club to arrange coach travel for fans as we would have liked to, but the club minibus is available and will depart at 5:30pm. For further details click here.

Runcorn Town play in the North West Counties League, Premier Division (the same league as Squires Gate). 2 levels below Lancaster in the football pyramid.

Here's the pyramid:

1 - Prem

2 - Championship

3 - L1

4 - L2

5 - National League

6 - National League North and National League South

7 - Northern Premier League Premier Division, Southern Football League Central Division, Southern Football League South Division and Isthmian League Premier Division

8 - Northern Premier League Division One North, Northern Premier League Division One South, Southern Football League Division One East, Southern Football League Division One West, Isthmian League Division One North, Isthmian League Division One South Central and Isthmian League Division One South East

9 - Runcorn Town are here. The North West Counties League Premier Division is part of level 9. I won't list all the leagues as there are 14 regional leagues at this level.

10 - AFC Blackpool are in the North West Counties League Division One North, part of level 10.

11 - Regarded as a feeder league. In the North West, there is the West Lancashire Football League which itself consists of 5 divisions. It's here where teams like Lytham Town, Poulton, Thornton Cleveleys, Chipping, and Freckleton play.

MATCH PREVIEW: Lancaster City V Runcorn Town

The Emirates FA Cup is back and the Dolly Blues have set themselves a great platform to build on after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stalybridge Celtic. That first game of the season showed a great deal of positives for sure and the City boys will be looking to show even more improvement as they battle it out in the first qualifying round of the country’s most coveted cup competition tonight at 7.45pm.

The Dollies host NW Counties League Premier Division side Runcorn Town FC and they will be looking to fight it out and advance into the second qualifying round. After impressive debuts by a host of new additions in Mark Fell’s side, the fans have every reason to be excited and hopeful that City can pick up their first win of the season in only their second game.

Last season saw City advance to the second qualifying round after a 0-0 draw and a 2-1 away replay victory against Northwich Victoria. However, a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Spennymoor Town ended the sides FA Cup campaign early on, Mark Fell and his staff will be hoping to make an improvement on that this season and tonight’s game can provide the best possible start to what will hopefully be a long run and successful season in the Emirates FA Cup.

The away support on Saturday was at his usual best and we hope to see the same backing tonight at Giant Axe for the quarter to eight kick off, we’ll see you there.

Come on you Dolly Blues!

I must say, the pitch looks to be in poor condition.

Surprising when you consider how little football's been played on it since March.

I remember him signing for Bayern.

It doesn't sound like he thinks he can get back to league level.

Think he has been plagued by injury throughout his career. Difficult for him to make a return now at his age playing two leagues below Lancaster - really that`s just playing with your pals.

Certainly got a story to tell...

Good draw for Lancaster away to Skelmersdale United from the NW Counties League (2 leagues below).

£3375 at stake for the winner.

Shouldn`t present any problems...
