Covid rules: What are the new coronavirus restrictions? 14:24 - Sep 22 with 201 viewsBringBackTheRedRoom

The prime minister has announced a series of new restrictions to try to stop the spread of coronavirus in England.

Boris Johnson said the new measures would probably stay in place for the next six months.

What are the latest changes in England?

Pubs, bars and restaurants to close at 22:00 BST
They will also be restricted to table service only
People should work from home wherever possible

Face masks compulsory for bar staff and seated customers, shop workers, waiters and taxi drivers

Limit on guests at weddings reduced from 30 to 15
Plans to allow fans to return to sporting events paused
"Rule of six" now applies indoor team sports
Fines for not wearing masks or following rules increased to £200 for first offence

What are the rules for pubs and restaurants?

From Thursday 24 September, all pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants in England are to shut no later than 22:00 each evening.

Venues that offer takeaways will only be able to offer deliveries after that time.

Venues will be restricted by law to table service only. That's in addition to the legal requirement to take customers' contact details.

As in Scotland, face coverings will be compulsory in pubs and restaurants - except for customers seated at a table.

Hospitality staff, and other retail workers, will also be expected to wear face coverings.
Other Covid-secure guidelines for businesses in retail, leisure and other sectors will also become legally enforceable.

Shops, restaurants and other hospitality businesses risk closure or penalties of £10,000 if they do not obey the requirements around maximum group sizes, track and trace and mask-wearing.

Should I work from home or the office?

People in England have now been told they should work at home if they can.

This is a change in advice from the government. In July, the prime minister said people should "start to go back to work now if you can" and last month a campaign was launched to encourage people back to the workplace.

The Office for National Statistics said on 17 September that 62% of adult workers were now commuting to their workplace, up from 36% in May.

What are the rules for weddings and sports?

From Monday 28 September, only 15 people will be able to attend weddings or civil partnerships, in groups of six. Funerals will be able to take place with up to 30 people attending.

Also from that date, you will only be able to play organised indoor sports in groups of less than six. It will still be possible for larger groups to take part in organised sports outdoors, but not on an informal basis.

Plans to allow spectators back to sporting events have been put on pause.

Local lockdowns

Even before the latest national restrictions, about 13.9 million people in the UK - equivalent to one in five - have been living under local restrictions.

The nature and extent of these restrictions have varied from place to place, but many already include early closing times for pubs and a ban on socialising with people from other households.

Rules on meeting people in Northern Ireland are getting tougher

From 18:00 on Tuesday 22 September, people in Northern Ireland won't be able to meet anyone who they don't live with inside their home.

There are only limited exceptions.

The governments of Scotland and Wales are set to detail their own plans for further restrictions.

Why are the restrictions being introduced now?

Deaths from Covid-19 remain low - accounting for only 1% of deaths in England and Wales in the week to 11 September.

But deaths are rising rather than falling for the first time since the beginning of April.

And there are fears that rising numbers of patients in hospital will lead to more fatalities.
The government's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, has warned there could be 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October - leading to more than 200 deaths per day by mid-November - unless action is taken.

I hadn't kept up with any new changes and arrived at the gym this morning for an early session.

Closed for at least 2 weeks.

Covid: I 'misspoke' over North East Covid rules, says PM

The prime minister has apologised after failing to clarify the detail of new tighter coronavirus restrictions in north-east England.

Boris Johnson said he "misspoke" when answering a question earlier about the rules, when he said residents should follow advice from local authorities.

Mixing between households in pub gardens and outdoor restaurants spaces will be against advice from midnight.

Labour said the PM was "grossly incompetent" for not knowing the rules.

Critics say a lack of detail has led to confusion.

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner said the PM was "grossly incompetent" for not knowing the rules, saying: "These new restrictions are due to come into force across huge parts of the country tonight. The government needs to get a grip."

Earlier, education minister Gillian Keegan was also unable to clarify the new rules.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, she said: "I don't know the answer to that question."

On Twitter, Mr Johnson clarified that the new rules meant those in the North East "cannot meet people from different households in social settings indoors, including in pubs, restaurants and your home".

"You should also avoid socialising with other households outside," he added.

In areas not covered by extra restrictions in England, the rule of six - meaning social gatherings are limited to six people - applies in private homes, indoors and outdoors, and places such as pubs, restaurants, cafes and public outdoor spaces.
