The latest tier system has cast doubt on whether non league football recommences on December 5th as planned.

No fans attending will mean no club income, and players will probably be unwilling to play for nothing.

Which is a shame...

Are they not covered by the £14m of funding in this Spud?

Sports to benefit from £300m emergency funding rescue package by BringBackTheRedRoom 19 Nov 2020 14:56
The government has announced a rescue package of £300m of emergency funding for sports impacted by the absence of spectators because of coronavirus.

Both rugby codes and horse racing are among the beneficiaries, but not clubs in football's Premier League nor the English Football League.

Cricket was not on the initial list.

"Clubs are the beating hearts of their communities - this boost will help them survive this difficult winter period," said DCMS minister Oliver Dowden.

The government said the Sports Winter Survival Package, which will be largely composed of low-interest loans, will support rugby union, horse racing, women's football and the lower tiers of the National League. It added that rugby league, motorsport, tennis, netball, basketball, ice hockey, badminton and greyhound racing were also in line to benefit.

Sports minister Nigel Huddleston added that grants would be available where organisations were unable to repay loans. He also said "the door was open" to any sport requiring funding, including cricket which was not on the initial list.

The money available is for sports in England, with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland responsible for their own budgets.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) statement added: "Preliminary allocations have been made on a needs-based assessment process and reflect the submissions made from the individual sports, and the funding process will be overseen by an independent decision-making board and supported by Sport England."

It said the first tranche of funding will be distributed in the coming weeks.

A breakdown of funding distribution (preliminary figures):

Note: The final amount received by each sport/organisation may differ from the amounts set out when final decisions are made by an independent decision-making board, and supported by Sport England.

Rugby Union: £135m - Rugby Football Union: £44m; Premiership clubs: £59m; Championship clubs: £9m; Clubs below Championship: £23m

Horseracing: £40m - To racecourses

Football: £28m - National League (steps 1-2): £11m; National League (steps 3-6): £14m; Women's Football (Women's Super League and FA Women's Championship): £3m

Rugby League: £12m

Motorsport: £6m - Owners/operators of major circuits (Silverstone, Goodwood, The British Automobile Racing Club, MotorSport Vision)

Tennis: £5m - Lawn Tennis Association

Netball: £4m - England Netball: £2m; Super League Netball: £2 million

Basketball: £4m - Basketball England: £1m; British Basketball League clubs (including Women's British Basketball League clubs): £3m

Ice Hockey: £4m - Elite League

Badminton: £2m - Badminton England

Greyhound racing: £1m - Greyhound Board of Great Britain

'It's a bit of breathing room'

Kat Ratnapala, director of netball at Superleague club Saracens Marvericks, told BBC Radio Five Live: "This means a huge deal to us. The big thing for us is to make sure we are prepared and financially able to start our new season in February.

"It's been a tough year for us, financially, to make ends meet. We set up a funding page just so we could come through the first Covid lockdown. It's a loan and we need to pay that back eventually.

"We're definitely not out of the woods, but it's a bit of breathing room so that we can get back on to court at least and get a full season under out belts."

Dunno to be honest, Red - I was just going on what young spud told me today. I haven`t heard anything about the clubs getting money - you would think if they had that there wouldn`t be a problem paying wages.

He hasn`t heard anything official, just on the group chats.

If games do go ahead (and he is playing for Kendal) they can have fans being in tier 2, but the tier 3 clubs cannot.

He just wants to play some football regardless of the level or whether he is paid or not, but not all are like that...

It's a poor do if grass roots clubs are left to wither on the vine and die.

Decision to be made on Tuesday as to whether the semi-professional leagues will restart. Been told it is unlikely to happen without crowds present. The Dollies have not received any funding and are not optimistic of receiving any.

A further decision is likely to be made on December 16th when the tiers are reviewed...

I've no idea how they're going to manage to do it.

Was told this week that non-league (NPL) may not start until the New Year now. I believe there is a meeting tonight to discuss it further. Kendal are playing friendlies tonight, Saturday and Tuesday in hope of a December start, but it is unlikely according to Felly.

I think I may give tonight a miss; bit cold innit?

Kendal Town are in tier 2 so they are allowed to play friendlies; most of the other teams in the league are in tier 3.

Grassroots football in parts of Lancashire has been suspended until January.

The Lancashire FA made the announcement on Friday night ahead of a weekend of fixtures and despite a national ban being lifted.

The move affects adult and youth matches and training in eight parts of the county and has provoked an outcry.

Chief executive Simon Gerrard said the decision followed talks with local authorities and health officials.

Lancashire has been in tier three since England came out of lockdown on Wednesday.

The government has placed the county under the tightest restrictions due to a "very high level" of infections.

The suspension affects Pendle, Burnley, Hyndburn, Rossendale, Blackburn with Darwen, Ribble Valley, Preston and South Ribble.

Former footballer Robbie Savage, who had backed the return of grassroots sports, has asked if the decision "can be overturned to let the kids play".

BBC sports editor Dan Roan also said there was "a lot of anger from parents and players about the timing of this decision".

A dad described it as "really disappointing", adding that his son, who was due to play this weekend, "has gone to bed in tears... why decide to announce it at 6.30pm on a Friday night when they have had all week?"

While another comment on Twitter read: "The LFA have badly misjudged this. They need to prove that this decision has been balanced against the mental health and well being of kids and everyone during this period."

Mr Gerrard said the game "had a wider social responsibility".

"We appreciate the mental health benefits that involvement in football provides, however, the health and survival of everybody, whether it be players, coaches, referees, volunteers or spectators, is paramount and can't be overlooked," he said.

"Statistics, provided to me throughout our detailed conversations with various stakeholders, highlighted the sheer scale of the potential impact that continuing grassroots football in these eight areas would have - details that I hope we can make public next week."

He said "no festivals or competitions will be sanctioned by Lancashire FA until the end of January".

Mr Gerrard added that players living in the affected boroughs could not play for a team in an unaffected borough.

He said the decision was supported by "all of the local authorities involved, in addition to representatives from public health".

He just prowls the board looking for opportunities for a ding dong with anyone.

Yep, he has issue with those that only talk politics, and anyone who is in the slightest way educated. Robbie and Catinstalbans are his betes noires, although he has taken a little shine to me recently.

He thought me and Robbie were the same person, probably still does!

I hope it`s not you masquerading as him on there!!
