Very sad if true. A genius of a footballer. The documentary on him was a real eye opener.

Don't know much about the integrity of the publication below.

Genuinely gutted. I know there’s still a lot of hate for Maradona in England but he’s the greatest footballer I’ve seen. RIP Diego.

Just confirmed on the BBC. A true footballing great but tarnished all the same, more so with the failed drugs test in the 1994 world cup if my memory serves me right. Not the greatest footballer ever, for me Messi is greater but all the same, a once in a generation player. His lifestyle has caught up with him sadly. RIP

I've heard it too. The world will be a lesser place without him in it.

Damn.

Up there with Messi in my lifetime with no-one else coming close.

Imagine him in today's game with billiard table pitches and no tackling.

Best ever imo

He should be proud, 3rd best Argentinian footballer behind Faurlin and Messi (in that order), not a bad achievement.

RIP

Very sad and at the age of 60, when he played you made a point of watching he was very, very special.

RIP

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Cardiac arrest they're saying. You somehow always had that feeling he wouldn't make old bones.

brilliant player as well as a fat little cheat, one of the best of all time. I saw him at Wembley in a charity game during the 80's, think it was England v Rest of the World, he was on another level.

60 is no age, RIP

Amazing player, controversial character. The world will be a lesser place without him.

Guess he punched the bucket.

Probably the greatest player that ever lived. A true genius. I got over the handball years ago. I reckon about 95% of all footballers have done soemthing like that in their careers, and all the 'cheat' stuff has been well OTT over the years. Yes, he did drugs, but jesus christ, I'd like to see anyone live under the pressure he lived under in those days.
RIP Diego.

Bare bones.

Very sad. Wonderful player. More of a character than Messi but Messi pips it by a short head as a footballer.

Pointless, in my opinion, comparing his ability with players of different eras, but what will never be repeated is the amount of hammer men like him and Pele had to take from defenders.

If you haven’t seen it, dig out Maradona in Mexico on Netflix. A real man-child, but what an entertainer!

The recent film documentary about him is amazing, and you realise how much abuse he took from defenders back then. Will be watching it again in the next few days.

RIP Diego.

Of course the Argentinian team had some great players during the eighties, but Maradona was the force that drove them on to huge success.
One of the things that that has eluded Messi.
However, as mentioned elsewhere, always ridiculous trying to compare players from different eras, but for me truly the one.

I went to Ossie's testimonial at spurs just to seem him play, him and hoddle playing together was pretty special.

I don't think he was the greatest, Pele was.

a fat little druggy cheat? yes, but he was some player.

Dragged (along with Canniga) the Argentina side to the World Cup final in 1990.

He also did amazing things, I guess very much a flawed genuis.

He won it single handedly for Argentina in '86.

QPR would have won the World Cup in 1986 if they had Maradona playing for them.

Can we not knock it?

Sad new when a football great does pass away, Maradona certainly up there with the greatest ever but off field shenanigans lowered his character.

From a very poor background and lacking in any real schooling, to be thrust into a world where your considered a icon could not have been easy, and no doubt enough 'sharks' out there to take advantage.

Have been fortunate to see a few of the Brit greats from 60's onwards and George Best must rank up up there, another who's life off the pitch caused much to detriment his character.

Seems a few of the early 'media' heroes have met with untimely early deaths, hopefully now the players who do reach great heights are better protected.
