Opposition Report: Portsmouth

Fifth placed Portsmouth head to Bloomfield Road on Tuesday evening, in a return to Sky Bet League One action.

Pompey come into Tuesday’s game on the back of an emphatic 6-1 Emirates FA Cup victory over National League side Kings Lynn Town, which included six separate goal scorers.

Portsmouth are League One’s top scorers so far this season, finding the back of the net 26 times. John Marquis has led the line superbly well for Pompey, finding the back of the net nine times in the league and 11 in all competitions so far this campaign.

The Hampshire-based Club are now in their fourth season back in League One, after gaining promotion back in 2017. Since then, Kenny Jackett’s side have been involved in two play-off campaigns and won the 2019 EFL Trophy, where they beat Sunderland on penalties at Wembley Stadium.

Last Time We Met

The points were shared on Portsmouth’s last visit to Bloomfield Road in August 2019. The visitors took the lead in the first half through Marcus Harness, before Armand Gnanduillet equalised for the Seasiders.

The Manager

Kenny Jackett is a vastly experienced manager, having amassed over 800 matches in charge of sides up and down the country. The 58-year-old has managed the likes of Watford, Swansea City, Millwall and Wolverhampton Wanderers, winning several promotions and cup competitions along the way in his managerial career.

Jackett is now in his fourth season in charge at Fratton Park, after taking over from Paul Cook who left for Wigan Athletic in 2017.

The Key Player

24-year-old Marcus Harness has impressed on the flanks for Portsmouth. Having signed for Pompey from Burton Albion in 2019 for an undisclosed fee, Harness has gone on to make over 50 appearances for the Fratton Park side, scoring 17 goals.

He has so far scored six goals and provided five assists to his team mates this season, in what is his best season to date.

Harness signed for Burton Albion’s Academy as a 14-year-old, going on to make nearly 100 appearances for the Brewers, as well as enjoying loan spells at Ilkeston Town, Aldershot Town and Port Vale before the move to Portsmouth.

Match Facts

Portsmouth have scored at least 2 goals in their last 5 away matches (League One).

There have been under 2.5 goals scored in Blackpool's last 3 home games (League One).

There have been over 2.5 goals scored in Portsmouth's last 3 away games (League One).

Portsmouth are undefeated in their last 7 away matches (League One).

Prediction

Having quickly put their midweek defeat at Doncaster behind them, it's now five wins in six matches in all competitions for Blackpool after their FA Cup progression, who're building momentum at the right time. However, the Seasiders remain just three points ahead of the danger-zone, although they've won their previous three home games.

Given the fact Portsmouth are in action 24 hours earlier than a host of their promotion rivals, a fifth away victory of the campaign could see Kenny Jackett's men end the evening in the automatic promotion places. Pompey have been impressive on the road this term, collecting 14 points from their six matches, but won't be taking an in-form Blackpool side lightly here.

A conservative line up by the looks of it.

It could be 4-2-3-1 with Husband and Turton and 2 defensive mids.

It could be a wise cjoice given Portsmouth's personel and playing style.

It would also allow our most skillful player, Kaikai, to play centrally and be more involved.

The big worry is in chopping and changing systems. 4-4-2 has been working, albeit against lesser teams.

Decide on which formation to play and stick with it.

Portsmouth usually line up 4-4-2.

If we play well, we could do to them what Doncaster did to us in the second half.

I watched them play Plymouth a couple of weeks ago. Plymouth played just Hardie up front against their two CBs who have the turning circle of a small oil tanker. Thought he did ok, but if it's the same back four that I saw then, they looked really dodgy with the ball on the deck being run at.

They've got a strong running / dribbling front line too which explains the defensive set up.

All good in principle, risky though.

Unlucky Hamilton.

Please stop letting Kaikai take the set pieces

HT 0-0 Like a game of chess, very few chances. I quite enjoyed that, but I think I'll be in the minority.

I thought we did well.

Portsmouth have come in hope of frustrating us by packing the defense and midfield and looking for crumbs and scraps on the break.

We've had 3 / 4 half chances against their massed ranks.

They've had 1 chance.

All this and they're the division's top scorers.

We're having to scrap it out for the right to play and we look a powerful side.

Did anyone ever think we'd go cutting through Portsmouth like a knife through butter. Never going to happen.

It's got 1-0 written all over it. Could go either way but we look comfortable at the moment.

Portsmouth might have switched to a traditional 4-4-2.

If so, could be good news for us.
