Covid Pfizer vaccine approved for use next week in UK 08:33 - Dec 2 with 212 viewsBringBackTheRedRoom

The UK has become the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for widespread use.

British regulator, the MHRA, says the jab, which offers up to 95% protection against Covid-19 illness, is safe for rollout next week.

Immunisations could start within days for those who need it the most, such as elderly people in care homes.

The UK has already ordered 40m doses - enough to vaccinate 20m people.

Around 10m doses should be available soon, with the first 800,000 arriving in the UK in the coming days.

It is the fastest ever vaccine to go from concept to reality, taking only 10 months to follow the same developmental steps that normally span a decade.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted "Help is on its way", and told BBC Breakfast that people will be contacted by the NHS when it is their turn for the jab.

He added: "I'm confident now with the news today that from spring, from Easter onwards, things are going to be better and we're going to have a summer next year that everybody can enjoy."

NHS Chief Executive, Sir Simon Stevens, said the health service was preparing for "the largest-scale vaccination campaign in our country's history".

Around 50 hospitals are on standby and vaccination centres in venues such as conference centres are being set up now.

Although vaccination can start, people still need to remain vigilant and follow coronavirus rules to stop the spread, say experts.

That means sticking with the social distancing and face masks, and testing people who may have the virus and asking them to isolate.

Prof Danny Altman, Professor of Immunology at Imperial College London, said news of the approval was "momentous".

"We have the first emergency approval for use of a really effective vaccine. Truly heroic."

What is the vaccine?

It is a new type called an mRNA vaccine that uses a tiny fragment of genetic code from the pandemic virus to teach the body how to fight Covid-19 and build immunity.

An mRNA vaccine has never been approved for use in humans before, although people have received them in clinical trials.

The vaccine must be stored at around -70C and will be transported in special boxes, packed in dry ice. Once delivered, it can be kept for up to five days in a fridge.

Who will get it and when?

Experts have drawn up a provisional priority list, targeting people at highest risk. Top are care home residents and staff, followed by people over 80 and other health and social care workers.

They will receive the first stocks of the vaccine - some as soon as next week. Mass immunisation of everyone over 50, as well as younger people with pre-existing health conditions, can happen as more stocks become available in 2021. It is given as two injections, 21 days apart, with the second dose being a booster.

What about other Covid vaccines?

There are some other promising vaccines that could also be approved soon.

One from Moderna uses the same mRNA approach as the Pfizer vaccine and offers similar protection. The UK has pre-ordered 7m doses that could be ready by the spring.

The UK has ordered 100m doses of a different type of Covid vaccine from Oxford University and AstraZeneca. That vaccine uses a harmless virus, altered to look a lot more like the virus that causes Covid-19.

Russia has been using another vaccine, called Sputnik, and the Chinese military has approved another one made by CanSino Biologics. Both work in a similar way to the Oxford vaccine.

The've done that quick sticks.

I wouldn't be first in the queue to have it.

Was reading (in the Pharmaceutical Journal) that under Regulation 174 the Pfizer vaccine has been granted temporary authorisation - which will be reviewed in a year - and that it has exemption from liability for any injuries.

Don`t wish to be negative, but that might take a little of the gloss off the announcement...

Yup, heard a couple of months ago Pfizer were asking various Governments for this.

Had to switch off Bojo's presser, when he linked getting this vaccine with Brexit.

Is this the cure that's got to be kept a about minus 2 zillion degrees?

I'll take my chances and hang fire for the results of the Over Wyre Clinical Trial.

Well, it is the Chinese year if the rat, but the image I posted is misleading - they're supposed to be lemmings - only in a cuddly, friendly way of course.

Can I ask a hypothetical, or even multiple choice, question?

Would you like to put your life in the hands of one of the following:-

A) Nothing, I'll risk it
B) A rushed through Pfizer solution
C) God
D) None of the above

Other than my A, B, C, D - There are plenty of other options to propose. Feel free ..........

When will I get a vaccine?
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that people are given the vaccine in the following order, although there is likely to be some overlap between groups:

1 residents in a care home for older adults, and their carers
2 everyone aged 80 and over, and frontline health and social care workers
3 everyone aged 75 and over
4 everyone aged 70 and over, and those who are clinically extremely vulnerable
5 everyone aged 65 and over
6 people aged 16 to 64 with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and death from Covid-19
7 everyone aged 60 and over
8 everyone aged 55 and over
9 everyone aged 50 and over
But logistical difficulties mean many care home residents will have to wait, if they can't get to hospitals.

Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, said the vaccine rollout will start at 50 "hospital hubs" in England next week.

GP practices will operate local vaccination centres as stocks become available. And - if regulators give approval for a safe way of splitting the packs of 975 doses - care homes will receive stocks.

But Sir Simon said that process may not take long - and the "first tranche" of care home vaccinations could happen this month, "with a fair wind".

He added that people due in hospital next week for an outpatient appointment may also be invited to get the vaccine.

The priority groups cover 90-99% of those at risk of dying from Covid-19, according to the JCVI.

The older you are, the higher your risk of becoming seriously ill or dying from the virus - and that risk rises sharply beyond 70. People with underlying health conditions are also vulnerable to the virus.

After these nine priority groups, there will be a second phase of vaccination for younger groups in the population.

Local NHS and public health teams will be given some flexibility to allocate vaccines to other at-risk groups, including people from ethnic backgrounds and deprived communities.

People will be vaccinated twice - 21 days apart - and immunity starts seven days after the second dose.

And on another planet, Gavin Williamson serves up a large dose of English exceptionalism on top of Hancock`s Brexit infused vaccine lap of honour yesterday, by proclaiming that the vaccine has been rolled out in Britain first because "we`re a much better country than every single one of them", and "we have the best scientists,"

He had name-checked several European countries previously who he thought were inferior to us, including France (fair enough) and Belgium.

This, despite the fact that scientists from Turkey and Belgium had done most of the heavy lifting with the Pfizer vaccine.

F***wit doesn`t begin to cover it...

Should be an easy win this for the Government, genuine good news, instead out comes the Trump populist/nationalist playbook.

Yep, they tried to gild the lily all right in a rather clumsy way.

They really do show contempt for the public with such ham-fisted attempts at nationalistic hubris and misdirection.

Nothing to do with Brexit, and the fact we are fortunate enough to have the vaccine first is largely because of the excellent work done by our European "friends and partners".
