Striker Ellis Simms made an impressive transition to Under-23s football in 2019/20 following his prolific campaign for the Blues' Under-18s side the previous season.
The powerful frontman hit eight goals in 15 Premier League 2 appearances for David Unsworth's team, with his development as a potent all-round centre-forward consistently catching the eye.
As well as his undoubted finishing ability, Simms' work-rate and link-up play earned praise from boss Unsworth and the attacker regularly featured in Everton first-team training towards the end of the season.
He was named in a senior Everton matchday squad for the first time in the Toffees' Premier League game at Sheffield United in July 2020.
Simms, who had time in the academies at Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers before joining Everton, signed for the Blues aged 16 and and penned his first professional deal in summer 2019 following a staggering personal campaign for Everton Under-18s.
The Oldham-born player struck an incredible 32 goals in 21 league matches and was on target 46 times in all competitions in 2018/19.

No chance of signing him. I bet the loan fee we're paying is quite substantial as well. The business model for these academies has changed over the years, they are expected to show a profit now.

I would change that no substitutions should be allowed to be made in injury time as it slows the game down and is frustrating for the opposing team

Blackpool goalscorer Ellis Simms learning tough lessons says boss Neil Critchley
Neil Critchley says Ellis Simms is still getting used to the physical rigours of playing regularly in League One.
It comes after the Everton loanee scored his first goal at Bloomfield Road in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon.
Despite putting his side in front, the 20-year-old was withdrawn with 20 minutes still left to play.
But Simms, whose loan spell on the Fylde coast is his first experience of senior football, is still getting up to speed with the demands of playing Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday.
Head coach Critchley said: “He’s a young player, he’s leading the line and him and Jerry (Yates) put themselves about with a physical presence.
“I think that was his fifth start and physically it’s taken a lot out of him playing so many games in such a short period of time. But he’s got to get used to that.
“Nevertheless, it was a great moment for him and I’m delighted he got that goal at Bloomfield Road. That’s the sort of typical goal he scores. He’s a poacher, he’s a penalty box player. “
In the absence of Gary Madine, Simms has perhaps had to play more football than initially anticipated.
Madine was missing from Blackpool’s squad for the seventh game running as he battles a niggling groin complaint.
The striker was conspicuous by his absence from the post-match warm-down on Saturday, which involved all of Pool’s senior players who were not in the starting XI. It suggested the striker may be further away from a return than first expected.
Critchley said of Madine: “He’s been back out on the grass running and doing more ball work. We’re hopeful he might be able to join in training some time next week.
“He was training and doing a bit more fitness work on Saturday. I’ve not spoken to the staff (to see how he is) yet but it’s something I’ll do.”
Elsewhere, there was more encouraging news regarding CJ Hamilton, who started the game and lasted over an hour as he stepped up his return from a serious hamstring injury.
The winger, who had been sidelined since December 19, made his comeback off the bench in last Tuesday’s draw against Crewe Alexandra.
Critchley added: “We want him back and we decided to start him on Saturday.
“The longer the game goes on and the longer he stays on, that’s where you get more of a risk of CJ suffering another injury.
“We want him as fit as possible so he’s able to play 90 minutes on a consistent basis.
“But we might just have to ease him back into that so he gets to the stage where he can play every game.”

If only we could sign him on a permanent or get him back on load next year.
Not going to happen.
Therefore, I say he's a crap loan signing. OK, I understand we need to get young quality players and bring them on but if we're not going to get Simms longer term then it's a waste of time.
We need loan players who are much nearer being, or are, first team ready.
Don't get me wrong. Simms on a perm would be a dream. A multi dimensional spearhead to our attack ....... next season.
However, we need players in the present, not tomorrow.

If Simms is out of contract next summer I wouldn't be surprised to see us making a cheeky nid for him in the Januart window.
On the subject of last season's loanees, Ben Woodburn's been getting rave reviews at Hearts. From the BBC website:

We could very well get him on loan but it would've been such a boost to sign him on a permanent in January.
In fact, I'm not sure how I'd feel about another loan period for Simms. Understanable on his part but very, very disappointing for us. A loan's not nearly as good is so many senses.

Unfulfilled careerwise. He had a few decent loans but his development was held back and he only left Everton to start competing in the real world at the age of 27.
Financially speaking he's probably a set up for life millionaire.

Blackpool miss out on Ellis Simms as Huddersfield Town, Millwall and Sunderland target chooses his preferred club Blackpool are set to miss out on a move for Ellis Simms, The Gazette understands.
The Seasiders have made a big push to re-sign their former loan star and had reached an agreement with his parent club Everton, having matched their terms.
However, it’s understood the 21-year-old has chosen to join Blackpool’s Championship rivals Sunderland on loan instead.
As many as six clubs have been in for the forward, who was an unused substitute at Bloomfield Road on Sunday as the Seasiders lost 4-2 to Frank Lampard’s side in a pre-season friendly.
The news comes as another major blow for the Seasiders, who came close to signing Colby Bishop from Accrington Stanley last week.
However, the 25-year-old joined Portsmouth instead after Michael Appleton’s side opted not to pursue a deal after an issue was raised with the striker’s medical.
As for Simms, he remains a popular figure with Blackpool fans following the role he played in helping the Seasiders win promotion during the 2020/21 season.
