Great shout. Apparently the well-to-do of the time stopped going because they were regularly mugged in the narrow alleys that led to the track by sundry riff-raff and foot-pads and the like. A few years ago I was involved in child-literacy programmes and dreamt up a project to get the youth interested in local-history which would culminate in a day where local-kids would dress up as horses, jockeys, and 19th century dissolute vagabonds' and gallop around the streets of W11 mugging the contemporary rich residents of Notting Hill. In the end, I deemed it a tad impractical, and sadly it never came to happen.

btw: Leftfield n Lydon Open Up is a great track but it was a Top 20 Smash Hit - hardly unknown - unless you spent the early 90s incarcerated and denied a transistor radio.

Spent the early 90's having two babies in very quick succession, moving area and house, 16% mortgage rates, two jobs etc, not having a pot to piss in, so I lost a few years and this passed me by.

16% mortgage rates in the 90s? Fcuking luxury. I was living in a tent in Cornwall. Foxes would nick my shoes. I was woken one morning by an earthquake. But you know what I still had a transistor radio and I still listened to the top 20.

I’m sort of heartened that the area around it was plagued with vagabonds even 140 years before coming out of Latimer Road station in the dark and getting home past the Pig and Whistle and the Notting Hill Barn in one piece.

Still have my 7” single of this one - one of first records I bought, How did you find it & if like The Chills try & find the movie on Martin Phillips as quite a tragic character. Some great tunes though
