Blackpool Football Club is working with the town’s council to help deliver a new East Stand at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool Council has today issued details of ‘Town Deal’ proposals for new facilities surrounding the football club’s stadium.

This includes the creation of community football pitches, business and commercial facilities and plans to regenerate the Revoe area.

But the project, entitled Southern Quarter/Revoe Community Sports Village, also includes plans for a new East Stand at Bloomfield Road.

“'Revitalising Revoe', a masterplan for the area developed with the community, was published in June 2020,” the council said in a statement.

“Funding will help to kickstart the plans by helping to transform the neighbourhood through refurbishment of existing facilities and building new facilities working closely with residents.

“It will provide new sports facilities that will help the local community to stay active, improving physical and mental well being. New business and community premises will also provide new job opportunities within the Revoe area.

“The funding will be put towards a larger pot, with existing funding being secured from other partners including Blackpool FC, Sport England, the Football Foundation and the National Lottery Community Fund, as well as other private sponsors.”

The council believes the project will “improve perceptions” of the Revoe area.

Initially built as a temporary facility following Blackpool’s promotion to the Premier League in 2010, the East Stand remains in place 11 years later.

In recent years, it has been mainly used by visiting supporters, while the press box is also housed in this area of the stadium.

Speaking previously about the club’s plans for the East Stand, chief executive Ben Mansford told The Gazette: “I think we see in certain areas of the club are struggling from under-investment, or no investment, over the last few years.

“Simon (Sadler) has been very passionate about making some quick decisions.

“The East Stand got to a place where it’s operational, but the long term vision for the club has to be carefully thought out.

“In terms of the infrastructure here and the blueprint of Bloomfield Road, we’ve probably got to come up with a bigger vision - maybe a masterplan for this site and some of the surrounding areas.

“That’s not to take a step back, but just to breath and make sure the vision for this site is something that might take us to another level if we take a sensible amount of time to think about it.

“But finishing the stadium and investing in infrastructure, creating a site that can help us with our aspirations to punch above our weight, is really important and I see it as a big part of what I’ll be doing over the next few months.”

Gasp, it seems too good to be true.

How much of the development is football club related?

I'd assume, as well as the east stand, the massive indoor gym in the Henry Street area, plus the pitches behind the kop and where the mecca is.

On top of all that there'll be a training facility developed as well.

All this and we'll be one of the best clubs in the country.

As a legacy, compare that to the sprinkler system.

Just one slightly picky point.

Is there a retractable roof?

Plans submitted for football pitches on land next to Blackpool FC

Detailed plans have been unveiled for new football pitches on land just north of Blackpool Football Club’s Bloomfield Road stadiu

The scheme would see sports facilities built on a site on the corner of Central Drive and Rigby Road previously earmarked for housing as part of the Foxhall Village.

Blackpool FC Community Trust has submitted a planning application to the council for a full size floodlit 11-a-side grass pitch, three five-a-side 3G pitches, a seven-a-side Cruyff Court for informal football, and a hard surface MUGA (multi use games area).

Also included in the scheme is a pavilion housing changing rooms, a 101 space car park and road improvements.

The development is part of the wider Revoe sports hub and masterplan for the area off Central Drive.

Work will be kickstarted thanks to a £5.5m grant as part of Blackpool’s £39.5m Town Deal awarded last October.

It is also proposed to make a funding bid to the Football Foundation, with work set to begin in the autumn if the bid is successful.

Documents submitted with the application say: “At the heart of this vision is the need for facilities to support the delivery of Community Trust programmes which help change people’s lives.

“The Fox Hall Village Sports Hub will be part of a larger facility campus managed by Blackpool FC Community Trust.

“The site is adjacent to the North Stand of the Bloomfield Road Stadium which houses the Trust Education and Community Centre opened in 2018. The Trust proposes to further develop space in the East stand to host Further Education programmes.

“This is an open site, and while some of the specialist football facilities might be enclosed and controlled, part of the site will remain open and accessible for informal sporting activity, play and casual recreation.”

The 11-a-side pitch would be used on week days by the community trust, and in the evenings provide a training facility for Blackpool FC Academy teams and host weekend matches.

Wider plans for the area also include the eventual development of a new East Stand at Blackpool FC, but the current application focuses on the community facilities.

Documents also refer to the club’s desire to relocate its training ground away from Squires Gate and say it is “seeking a location in the heart of Blackpool but has not been able to identify a suitable site.”

They add “the 3G pitches would provide training facilities for the professional and Academy teams as well as for Blackpool FC Community Trust programmes.”

Work on the £50m Foxhall Village stopped in 2019 when developer Hollinwood Homes went into administration with just 193 out of the proposed 410 homes built.

Since then the council has taken control of the site.

A great community facility that's also of benefit to the club.

Interesting to hear that a new East is in the pipeline and also that a site for the principal training ground hasn't been decided.

It must mean that the new TG site is the subject of longstanding negotiation and the loction could be delicate or controversial - Perhaps some kind of council / state owned land and / or green belty type protected land has been targeted.

Why the name 'Cruyff Court'? I really don't understand that.
