Bristol City are weighing up a ‘formal approach’ for Blackpool’s Jerry Yates, as per a report by Bristol Live.

Bristol City are keen on boosting their attack by luring the League One striker to Ashton Gate this summer.

Yates, who is 24 years old, has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season and is a man in-demand.

He is also believed to be the subject of interest from Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest, as per a report by The Athletic.

Yates’ future at Bloomfield Road will no doubt depend on whether the Tangerines are promoted through the Play-Offs or not.

Blackpool signed him from Rotherham United last summer and he has become an instant hit on the seaside. His goals have pushed the Tangerines into the top six under Neil Critchley.

The former Doncaster Rovers man spent the season before last on loan at Swindon Town and helped the Robins gain promotion from League Two before Rotherham decided to cash in on him.

Nigel Pearson is gearing up for his first full campaign in charge of Bristol City and has his eye on Yates.

Gathering pace.

I hope they've got deep pockets, we paid good money to get Yates on a 3 + 1:

Bristol City considering making formal approach to sign 20-goal forward

Bristol City are considering making a formal approach to Blackpool to sign forward Jerry Yates as they step up their recruitment plans, according to Bristol Live.

The Robins have previously been linked with a potential move for Yates, following on from his impressive form in League One this season. He registered 20 goals and provided seven assists in his 45 appearances in the regular campaign. The 24-year-old also provided another assist during the Tangerines’ 3-0 win against Oxford United in the first leg of their play-off semi-final.

According to the latest report from Bristol Live, the Robins are now weighing up whether they should come in with a formal approach for the forward. Although it is also reported that they are considering other potential options in the attacking department as they aim to find a replacement for Famara Diedhiou who is set to depart Ashton Gate.

Although it is also reported that they are considering other potential options in the attacking department as they aim to find a replacement for Famara Diedhiou who is set to depart Ashton Gate.

It is also believed that any formal negotiations would have to be on hold until the end of Blackpool’s play-off campaign, with the Tangerines likely to make it through to the Wembley final given they hold a 3-0 lead heading into the second leg at Bloomfield Road.

The verdict

This is encouraging news for Bristol City and shows that they are ready to potentially make a move for Yates now as they aim to bring in a new forward this summer. The 24-year-old seems to be a player with a lot of ability to provide both goals and assists in the final third and having started to deliver on his promise with Blackpool could be ready for the step up to the Championship.

However, Bristol City are going to face a nervous wait over whether Blackpool do earn promotion or not via the play-offs. If they are promoted to the Championship then they would be in a strong position to ensure that Yates remains with them next term. That means that the Robins might have to move on to some of the other targets they are pursuing.

Yates seems to be one of their primary transfer targets heading into the summer and it looks like he is the player they believe could make a difference for them in the final third. Therefore, Nigel Pearson will be hoping that he gets the right backing with the formal approach to get a deal for him concluded.

Who's their primary target and do we care?:

Bristol City stance on swoop for key Blackpool cog revealed

Bristol City do hold an interest in Blackpool striker, Jerry Yates, but they see him as more of a secondary option this summer as they look to revamp Nigel Pearson’s squad.

Pearson oversaw a disappointing end to the 2020/21 campaign at Ashton Gate, with the Robins finishing lower mid-table despite the fact that they flirted with a potential promotion push earlier in the season under Dean Holden.

There’s been no holding back in trimming the squad down early this summer, with Bristol City now eyeing recruits.

A report from Bristol Live has revealed that Yates is a target that Bristol City are considering this summer, although at this stage he is seen as a secondary option for the Robins as they await to see what unfolds elsewhere in the market.

Yates, 24, has struck 21 goals and registered seven assists for Neil Critchley’s side this season in League One, with Blackpool finishing third in the table at the conclusion of the regular season.

He’s since helped the club manoeuvre through the play-off semi-finals, with Blackpool facing Lincoln City tomorrow afternoon at Wembley in the League One play-off final.

Yates struck once in the semi-finals as Blackpool beat Oxford United 6-3 on aggregate.

The Verdict

The fact that Yates is seen as a secondary option for Bristol City is actually quite exciting, as it indicates that the club have a really solid first choice.

For what it is worth, Yates would be superb for the Robins this summer. He’s scored a lot of goals this season in League One, spearheading Blackpool’s push for promotion back into the Championship.

A slight hurdle to overcome for any club looking to sign him will be the fact Blackpool can win promotion tomorrow. In that eventuality, you’d imagine he might stay put at Bloomfield Road.

That could well be something that’s got Bristol City sitting on their hands right now with regard to stepping on their initial interest.

Hands off!!

If Rangers accept they're out of the running, the same probably goes for Yates' other suitors as well:

Rangers: Gerrard suffers Jerry Yates blow

Rangers’ hopes of signing Jerry Yates this summer have taken a significant blow after Blackpool earned promotion to the Championship through the League One playoffs, which will surely decrease the chances of him joining up with Steven Gerrard at Ibrox ahead of next season.

Rangers were first linked with a move for the former Swindon Town man by The 72 back in April, with a number of Championship sides also said to be interested in signing the 24-year-old striker, who could well have been the long-term replacement for the ageing Jermain Defoe.

Yates was a key player in Neil Critchley’s side this season, contributing 21 goals and eight assists in 47 League One appearances, which helped him average an impressive 6.92 rating from WhoScored.

This saw him finish as the third top scorer in England’s third tier this season, so it is no surprise that he is being linked with a move away from Bloomfield Road.

However, after the Tangerines registered a 2-1 win against Lincoln City on Sunday afternoon to seal a return to the Championship, it may prove difficult for any interested sides to prise him away from Blackpool this summer.

The English striker still has two years left on his contract at the North West club which suggests that Rangers may well be forced to pay over the odds if they are keen on bringing him to Ibrox this summer.

Blackpool boss Critchley was full of praise for Yates earlier in the season, saying:

“Considering the start he had to the season, which was similar to the team, the goalscoring record since then has been top drawer.

“He’s looking really on form, full of confidence and we brought him off at the end just to save him a little bit. But he’s bang in form and if we keep him on the pitch and he stays fit, then hopefully he can add to his tally because 20 goals is a fantastic achievement for him.”

He will be desperate to keep his top scorer at the club ahead of the Championship 2021/22 campaign and therefore, Blackpool’s recent promotion is a huge blow to Gerrard’s chances of signing him this summer and finding a potentail heir to Defoe.

The Yates merry-go-round continues but we've got him on a long contract, been promoted, don't need to sell and anyway, a good season with us in the championship will see his value increase 5 fold:

What qualities would Jerry Yates bring to Nottingham Forest if he signed?

Nottingham Forest are said to be eyeing a move for Blackpool striker Jerry Yates this summer, with Nottinghamshire Live reporting that the 24-year-old is on Chris Hughton’s list of potential targets.

The former Swindon Town and Rotherham United man has come of age this term and bagged 23 goals across all competitions for the Tangerines as they secured a promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship at Wembley Stadium during the weekend just gone thanks to a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City.

Yates has become a key player at Bloomfield Road and is currently under contract with the club until the summer of 2023 as he weighs up his options this summer.

In what year were Nottingham Forest founded?

Here, we take a look at the THREE main qualities that Yates would bring to Nottingham Forest if he signed for the club this summer.

Link up play

The Blackpool man is capable of linking the play up well along the frontline, with Yates having largely played in a front two for much of the campaign just gone.

He notched up eight assists during the season as he continuously looked to set up his teammates and he would add something different to what Forest already have up top.

His ability to drop deep and pick up pockets of space to receive the ball on the half turn makes him an incredibly difficult player to mark.

His movement and tendency to make key passes would add an extra edge to what was a stale Forest attack last season.

Dribbling skills

Yates also shows a his tendency to dribble at pace with the ball and has the ability to beat a man and get his shot off in tight situations.

He would add some much needed pace and drive to the Forest counter attack and is also capable of playing wide on the left of a front three.

His versatility and turn of pace means that he could be a good option for Hughton utilise in games where his side may not enjoy the majority of ball possession.

The Blackpool man is certainly a lot more nimble than the current striking options that the Reds have at their disposal.

Gets in behind

His ability to run in behind and move into the channels allows his side to stretch opposition defences when they are on the attack.

He would function well in a front two alongside the likes of Lewis Grabban and Lyle Taylor, with the aforementioned duo being strikers who prefer to stay central to the goal.

Yates could make runs into areas that defenders don’t want to be drawn into, which in turn could open up more space for the likes of Grabban and Taylor to score in.

He gets the best out of himself and also the players around him, with his movement off the ball causing havoc.

Not going to happen:

Sources: Blackburn line up Yates as replacement for Southampton and Norwich target Armstrong

Blackburn Rovers are lining up a move for Blackpool striker Jerry Yates to replace in-demand Adam Armstrong, Football Insider understands.

Rovers are ready to cash in on Armstrong, 24, this summer if their £15million asking price is met.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Blackburn have been assessing potential replacements and their top target is Yates following his goal-drenched 2020-21 League One campaign.

This site revealed earlier today (15th June) that Southampton and Norwich lead the race for Armstrong.

The Saints are preparing for the possibility of losing Danny Ings this summer and they are lining up a bid for Armstrong.

In turn, Rovers have turned attention to Blackpool ace Yates after his 23-goal 2020/21 campaign.

He joined the Seasiders last summer, signing a three year contract.

Blackpool have the option to extend his deal by a further year.

The 24-year-old netted 20 times and contributed six assists 44 League One appearances to fire the Tangerines to the play-offs.

He then scored once and set up a further two goals in the play-offs to help Blackpool secure promotion to the Championship.

Yates has already played 29 times in the second tier after coming through the youth ranks at Rotherham.

Blackburn have identified the hitman as their top target should Armstrong move to the Premier League this summer.

The 24-year-old only has a year left on his contract at Ewood Park and Rovers know they may have to cash in.

He scored 28 goals in 40 Championship appearances for Rovers to catch the eye of top-flight scouts.

It is understood the likes of Southampton, Norwich and Everton are all in pursuit.

I won't bother posting the link but there's another article today again linking that both Bristol City and Nottingham Forest, as well as Blackburn, to Yates.

Of course, you can neither stop clubs from showing an interest nor journalists from writing stories but isn't it about time BFC put these rumours to bed, one way or the other, once and for all.

I'd suggest the start of pre-season training would be a good time to stop the rumours - issuing a statement with an outright refusal to sell (unless for silly money).

If this isn't the case, we can only assume the club are maneuvering for a decent fee this summer.

Needs sorting either way, it'd be unhealthy for it to drag on as a one of those summer transfer sagas.

Finances will dictate this

Simon Sadler has already said we'll need to sell to move forward.

Bit of back of fag packet stuff. but I reckon he's spent or committed to spend over £35m in the last 2 years.

Wages in this division are nuts. If someone offers Jerry £20k a week, we can't compete at the moment

There's talk about wages and price tag here:

https://the72.co.uk/239267/blackburn-rovers-line-up-blackpools-yates-price-tag-r

They say Yates is currently on £2,100 pw while Armstrong is on £17k pw.

The price tag quoted is higher than the original £2m now we've been promoted.

To add: the article is clearly uninformed as it bangs on about Yates operating at his best as a lone striker (highly debatable) which is a role that suits Mowbray's preferred tactics down to the ground.

If I were selling, which I'm not, I'd hold out for £7 and not a penny less.

I think we've all gathered that Rovers are going to make a serious bid.

And yes, if they're going to offer Yates £10-£15k pw then we can't keep hold of him: long contract or not.

Is the best we can hope for is to start a bidding war to drive the price up?

I think Yates is good, but not all that good.

I'd let him go for a good offer but the problem we have is that he's our only established striker - Madine unfortunately being physically not up to it anymore, Lavery a complete unknown, and Simms (if we get him back) a bit young to shoulder the responsibility of being the main man.

If we had another established front man I'd snap the hands off anyone offering a decent fee. I'd feel fine about letting Yates go if we had a another good striker / senior pro to fall back on.

As it is, if Yates left, we'd be on a wing and a prayer.

West Brom now in the mix (We're said to be asking for £5m):

West Brom want Blackpool striker Jerry Yates this summer

West Brom have expressed an interest in Blackpool striker Jerry Yates ahead of a potential summer move, according to The Sun.

The Baggies are looking to strengthen their forward line with Mbaye Diagne returning to Galatasaray after his loan spell, and they reckon Yates could be capable of firing them back to the Premier League.

Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest are also keen on the 24-year-old, with Blackpool demanding £5million from suitors [The Sun].

Great move

Yates bagged 21 League One goals and eight assists in 47 games last term to help the Seasiders secure Championship promotion.

He could prove to be exactly what we need to secure an instant top-flight return if he is able to replicate his prowess in front of goal in the second division.

Yates proved himself in front of goal while on loan at Swindon Town in the League Two in 2019-20, scoring 13 goals in 31 appearances, and West Brom could do with such a brilliant finisher.

Having secured back-to-back promotions in the last two seasons, the League One PFA Fans’ Player of the Year would be keen on another promotion, and could be given the chance at the Hawthorns.

We need someone with such hunger leading our line, and the fact that he is also able to play on both wings is an added advantage.

The two-time Rotherham United Young Player of the Year has the potential to become a Premier League striker, and West Brom should not hesitate to snap up someone who shares the same dream as them when it comes to top-flight football.

To repeat, I'm not against selling Yates but this summer is a bad time with us not having another established and fit for purpose striker.

A top L1 player or an out-of-favour prem attacker.

My price £7m and with part of that we need a centre forward who'll be our 'go-to' guy for the forthcoming season. Someone of the right age, experience, to be part of the backbone of our team. Not a punt or a crock.

If not, we're asking for trouble.
