The Push for the Play-Offs 22:26 - Apr 1 with 2118 viewsspell_chekker

The average points total for the last play off spot, 6th place, in L1 is 74.5.

The average points total for automatic promotion in 2nd place is 86.7.

We've currently in 7th place with 57 points from 35 matches and so an automatic slot is now well out of reach (10 wins needed from 11 remaining games)

To achieve the play-offs, we require another 18 points from our last 11 games. For example, 5 wins, 3 draws, 3 defeats. Very much doable.

Clubs as far down as Ipswich in 11th or even MK Dons in 12th could be play-off contenders if they go on a run.

Friday's fixtures:

Doncaster Rovers v Charlton Athletic

Accrington Stanley v Burton Albion
Crewe Alexandra v Hull City
Fleetwood Town v Peterborough United
Ipswich Town v Bristol Rovers
(Northampton Town v Shrewsbury Town)
(Plymouth Argyle v AFC Wimbledon)
Portsmouth v Rochdale
Sunderland v Oxford United
Swindon Town v Blackpool

There are arguably only 2 fixtures (Northampton Town v Shrewsbury Town + Plymouth Argyle v AFC Wimbledon) that don't concern promotion contenders.

3 points today push us up to 6th place - we're looking comfortable there with out games in hand.

Statistically speaking, we now only need 15 points from our 10 remaining matches to achieve the average play-off points total.

5 wins from 10 will do it.

The points we're putting on the board are chipping away at our promotion rivals.

It's putting the pressure in them.

At the very worst, and that's if heaven and earth open up, we will slip back to 10th if we lose on Monday.

Monday's fixtures:

AFC Wimbledon v Fleetwood Town
Blackpool v Gillingham
Bristol Rovers v Doncaster Rovers
Burton Albion v Swindon Town
Hull City v Northampton Town
Milton Keynes Dons v Crewe Alexandra
Oxford United v Accrington Stanley
Peterborough United v Sunderland
Rochdale v Ipswich Town
Shrewsbury Town v Plymouth Argyle
Wigan Athletic v Portsmouth

If we beat Gillingham on Monday: with our games in hand their silly little promotion challenge will be holed beneath the waterline.

One thing's for sure - they'll be up for it. If we win, it'll put to bed the notion that we can't beat cloggers / battling L1 teams.

To reach the magic 75 points we now need 12 points from 9 games.

That equates to 4 wins.

A 100% Easter programme has whittled down the number of sides that are likely to catch us up.

I'd say that out of the teams not in the play off places only Charlton, Ipswich, Doncaster, and Accrington are capable of overtaking us.

It's more than on.

Only a severe dip in form for whatever reason can stop us now.

It's weird after being in 12th place for week after week.

After a bad start to the season we've regrouped, been relentless, and clung on.

We're now playing some good stuff.

The play offs are now ours to lose.

Didn't think we'd get into the top six still with games in hand. Thought playing Tuesday, Saturday added with the long term injuries would have taken their toll by now. Going into the last ten games with it in your own hands, is all you can ask for.

I always believed we were heading in the right direction under Critchley but until quite recently didn't think we'd make the play offs this season.

Even though it was a dogs dinner of a game, I thought I saw a collective undersatnding develop against MK Dons. For the first time, everyone seemed clear about their role in the team.

I'm surprised at where we are but now quietly confident. I think we've got good players who know what they're doing together, as a unit.

It'll be interesting to see if any returning players get back into the team.

To reach the magic 75 point mark we now need 11 points from 8 games.

3 wins, 2 draws, and 3 defeats.

It wouldn't leave much room to manoeuvre if Sunderland were to do the unthinkable and beat us twice.

Another way, albeit a depressing one, of looking at it: 7 placed Charlton could mathamatically get 83 points if they win all their remaining matches.

Still think 73 points will be enough. Lot of the teams around us have to play each other

A win toight would put us in a strong position: needing only 8 points from 7 games.

That'd be more or less a point a game which means that only relegation form would be needed from then on in order to qualify for the play offs.

Portsmouth, Sunderland, and Ipswich in particular could well slip up tonight with tricky away games.

Oxford and Lincoln both with home games against unfancied opposition.

Charlton not playing.

I'd say that only Charlton and Oxford can catch us now and it's going to be very difficult for Oxford, even though they're on a run, as they've played 2 games more than us.

We now need 10 points from 7 games. 3 wins, 1 draw, 3 defeats.

Where will the 10 points come from?

Blackpool v Sunderland
Rochdale v Blackpool
Blackpool v Shrewsbury Town
Sunderland v Blackpool
Northampton Town v Blackpool
Blackpool v Doncaster Rovers
Blackpool v Bristol Rovers

The 3 obvious wins are against Rochdale, Northampton, and Doncaster. From what I saw in the earlier matches both Rochdale and Northampton are made for us to play against and Doncaster have completely imploded.

The 2 matches against Sunderland need no comment save to say I can't see us losing both.

Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury are the kind of L1 dog dirt teams (like Accrington) we haven't had much joy against this season. In saying that, I'm sure we can find a way of beating at least 1 of them.

Portsmouth and Oxford have the easiest run ins.

Having said that, Oxford need to sweep all before them with a maximum points' haul to stand a chance of catching us.

The Sunderland matches aside, we've got a comparatively reasonable run in.

Today's play off thoughts:

If nothing else, our defence is resolute. Ballard is there, Gretarrson is now match fit, Turton as steady as ever, Husband and Ekpiteta chomping at the bit for their chance plus Garbutt, Gabriel, and Thorniley. Any combination you like will keep a clean sheet.

The defence will get us over the line.

Wonder if we'll start with 3 CHs against Sunderland?
