Neil Critchley issues fresh update on the fitness of his squad ahead of Blackpool's final game of the regular season against Bristol Rovers

Neil Critchley has issued an update on the fitness of his Blackpool squad ahead of their final game of the regular season against Bristol Rovers on Sunday.

After guaranteeing their place in the top six in midweek, there is little at stake for the Seasiders this weekend other than final league position, which will determine who they play in the play-off semi-finals.

Bristol Rovers, meanwhile, have nothing to play for either having already been relegated to League Two.

Critchley will be without a number of players once again, with eight players missing their midweek 2-0 win against Doncaster Rovers.

Daniel Gretarsson (shoulder), Ethan Robson (groin), Matty Virtue (ACL), Grant Ward (calf), CJ Hamilton (metatarsal) and Gary Madine (groin) are all sidelined at the minute.

Virtue and Hamilton are definitely out for the remainder of the campaign, while Bez Lubala is still unavailable due to a ‘club matter’.

Critchley provided an update on the other five when asked by The Gazette this morning.

Daniel Gretarsson

“Daniel’s strength is improving and the mobility is improving in his shoulder,” Critchley said.

“It will come to a head in the next few days of what we decide to do with Daniel and his feelings will be taken into account as well.

“There’s a chance that by dislocating your shoulder it can happen again, so we have to take the decision whether we think it’s the right thing to strengthen that part of his body and carry on, or to operate now and hopefully alleviate the chance of it happening again in the future.

“After Sunday, we’ll sit down as a staff and with Daniel and make that decision.

“He’s a footballer and he sees semi-finals and maybe a Wembley opportunity, but we have to take his feelings into consideration but also what is right for him in terms of his career and the long-term future.”

Ethan Robson and Grant Ward

“Ethan has had a scan,” Critchley said. “He won’t make Sunday, but we’re hopeful he could be involved in the semi-final games. Wardy is the same as well.

“They won’t appear on Sunday, that’s for certain, they’ll definitely be out. But hopefully within the next week, if their bodies respond to the treatment and we can gently start introducing them back onto the grass, then we will see how they respond.

“I wouldn’t rule them out of the semi-final games yet.”

Sullay Kaikai

“Sullay is okay,” Critchley said. “He’s just been given a chance to rest because it’s more of a fatigue injury more than anything.

“He’s played a lot of games this season, probably more than in any other season he’s played before.

“There’s nothing untoward with Sullay, so it’s just about building him back up strength-wise and physically building his confidence back up.

“Hopefully he’ll be okay for next week.”

Gary Madine

“We’re hopeful Gary will do a bit of training today, which would be a massive plus for us,” Critchley said.

“If Gary can start getting back on the grass and integrate back in the group (that would be great), but we have to take it daily with him.

“Some days he feels better than others and he responds better to the work he’s been doing, but he’s obviously doing everything he can and he wants to get back involved as soon as possible and we’d love to have him back.”

MATCH PREVIEW: Blackpool v Bristol Rovers

The final day has arrived for the League One season with Bristol Rovers knowing anything but a win will see them finish bottom of the division.

The Gas go to third place Blackpool on 38 points, with 23rd placed Swindon two points ahead of them.

One positive Rovers will be taking into the new campaign though is that the sale of Jonson Clarke-Harris last summer has landed them a six-figure sum plus 50k in add ons thanks to Peterborough’s and Clarke-Harris’ fantastic season.

Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony confirmed the news on the Hard Truth Podcast.

“We will be paying out £1.2 million in bonuses to players, management staff and other clubs,” MacAnthony told the Hard Truth podcast.

“The club thing is a good thing. I always throw in add-ons when I buy players as I’m happy to spread the wealth among lower league clubs.

“Bristol Rovers will get a six-figure sum for us winning promotion from the terms of the Jonson Clarke-Harris deal and they’ll get £50k for him winning the League One Golden Boot.

“The Bristol Rovers chairman took time out to send me congratulations on winning promotion by the way. He’s a classy guy.”

Rovers go into the game with injury doubts for goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola. If unfit, then its likely Joe Day will be making the final appearance of his loan spell. With Blackpool still having places in the top six to play for, it is unlikely Barton will experiment with his side too much.

Blackpool go into the game having secured a place in the top six in midweek with a win over Doncaster.

The Tangerines had a difficult start to the league season that left them in the bottom half of the table following the reverse fixture between the sides back in January.

But a return of 50 points in the 25 games since has seen Blackpool rise to third in the league table.

Neil Critchley’s side will now have an opportunity to return to the second tier for the first time since 2015.

Ellis Simms was the match winner on Tuesday night and the striker, on loan from Everton, gave his thoughts on how the season since January has gone.

“It was a great result and one we can all be proud of,” Simms told the club’s website.

“We knew we needed a point on the night to secure our place in the play-offs, but we managed to get the win. I think overall, we’ve had a successful season up to this point, but there is still a lot of work to do.

“In being third at this stage, the table reflects just how well the team has done over the past six months or so, and we can be really pleased with where we are at the moment.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here since joining in January. My main objective was to play and help the team push on as much as I can, and I managed to do that on Tuesday.”

Blackpool boss Critchley has no new injury concerns ahead of the game and could well name an unchanged team. Kevin Stewart was substituted after only coming onto the field twenty minutes prior but Critchley confirmed this was down to him receiving a yellow card and he was being cautious.

Team News

Neil Critchley could stick with the same Blackpool XI started the midweek win at Doncaster.

Both Alex Rodman and Sam Nicholson to miss out for Bristol Rovers.

Match Facts
- Bristol Rovers have lost 9 of their last 11 matches (League One).
- Bristol Rovers have been losing at both half time and full time in 6 of their last 8 matches (League One).
- Bristol Rovers have failed to score in their last 4 matches (League One).
- There have been under 2.5 goals scored in 8 of Bristol Rovers's last 10 games (League One).
- Blackpool are undefeated in 19 of their last 21 matches (League One).
- Blackpool have kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 7 matches (League One).
- There have been under 2.5 goals scored in Blackpool's last 4 home games (League One).

Prediction

Blackpool will be hoping to round off their season with a fourth straight victory, which will wrap up third-place in the process, and give them home advantage in their play-off semi-final. The Seasiders have suffered just one home defeat since October, and should have too much here against the rock-bottom Pirates.

Meanwhile, only three points will give Bristol Rovers any chance of ending the season at the foot of the League One table, but Joey Barton's team are winless on their travels since early-December, and will be desperate to end a wretched campaign on a high.

Match Preview - Blackpool v Bristol Rovers

The lowdown on Sunday's encounter at Bloomfield Road.

Rovers' season concludes at Sunday lunchtime, as the Gas make the trip north to face Blackpool in the final fixture of the season.

The Gas will be looking to end a disappointing season on a positive note, as the attention has already been cast towards a bounceback to the third-tier next season.

Blackpool's attention will firmly be on the playoffs, after they clinched a spot in the end of season showdown in midweek.

All fixtures across the division KO at midday on Sunday and below is all the need-to-know info...
Manager's Preview

Joey Barton spoke with the local press via Zoom on Friday, to preview our trip to Bloomfield Road.

With Rovers' relegation confirmed, the Manager's thoughts and plans are already well set on the next campaign.

Barton said, "It’s tough at the moment because you’ve got nothing to play for and thoughts naturally drift towards next season and moving the group out, clearing the place out and starting to build out of the ashes of this team."

Media Talk...

Neil Critchley also previewed Sunday's contest, alluding to his thinking with a playoff semi-final on the agenda for his side.

Critchley told Blackpool's YouTube channel, "There's a lot to put into the pot, thinking wise on Sunday.

'It was great to get the job done on Tuesday and mathematically get into the playoffs. There are a lot of permutations, but our focus is on Bristol and trying to win that game.

'I would be lying if I said that there wouldn't be any changes. We've got to get the balance right, in terms of the players who have played a lot of minutes. For the past few months, we have been playing Saturday, Tuesday, pretty much every week."

Form Guide

Blackpool have climbed up to 3rd in the league standings, following a run of six wins over the last 10 games.

The Seasiders bounced back strongly to back-to-back defeats against both Rochdale and Shrewsbury at the end of April with three wins on the spin, clinching a playoff spot in the process.

Blackpool have been on the scoresheet 59 times in their 45 fixtures this season and have conceded just 37 times - making them the joint best side in the league for the fewest goals conceded.

Everton loanee, Ellis Simms, grabbed a brace on Tuesday evening in a 2-0 win over Doncaster, a three-point haul that secured a playoff berth for Neil Critchley's side.

Jerry Yates is the leading goalscorer for Blackpool this term, contributing 20 goals and 6 assists across the season.

Stat Pack

Rovers are without a clean sheet in three games against Blackpool.

Sunday's hosts are on a three-game winning streak - beating Sunderland, Northampton and Doncaster without conceding a single goal.

Jerry Yates is the leading goalscorer for the Seasiders at home this campaign, with seven goals at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool have scored 11 goals in the first half of home games this term and 18 goals in the second half.

Away from home this season, Rovers have scored 17 goals, with Brandon Hanlan, Luke Leahy and Sam Nicholson all scoring 4 goals apiece away from the Mem. On average, the Gas register 11.7 shots during away matches.

Rovers have picked up 15 points on their travels this term - as Blackpool have registered 40 points on home soil.

Joey Barton has come up against Neil Critchley four times in his managerial career, winning twice, drawing once and losing on one occasion.

Past Encounter

Rovers got the better of Blackpool when the sides met at the Mem earlier this season.

The Seasiders went ahead in the 8th minute, with Gary Madine grabbing the opening goal, after converting into the roof of the net from Grant Ward's curling cross.

Rovers pulled back level in the 34th minute, as Brandon Hanlan arrowed a low finish into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later, Rovers were ahead, as an acrobatic volley from Sam Nicholson rocketed into the top corner to give Rovers the victory.

Around the Grounds

With both the relegation matters and the automatic promotion places decided - attention turns to the quest for the playoffs places this weekend, with the focus on the race for 6th spot. Portsmouth currently sit in 6th spot on 72 points, as they host Accrington at Fratton Park on Sunday. Oxford are a point behind Pompey and they entertain Burton Albion on the weekend. Charlton still have a chance of leaping above both Oxford and Portsmouth, as they are level on 71 points with Oxford. The Addicks host Hull City at the Valley on the weekend. Swindon head to Wigan, the Gas know that if the Robins lose, three points would be enough to lift them off the foot of the table.

Preview: Bristol Rovers (H)

Blackpool welcome Bristol Rovers to Bloomfield Road on Sunday for a midday kick-off in the final day of the regular season.

The Seasiders secured their place in the play-offs in Tuesday night’s victory over Doncaster Rovers, and will secure third place in the league table with a win on Sunday.

Bristol Rovers head to Bloomfield Road on Sunday having already been relegated and rooted to the foot of the league table. Joey Barton’s side have won just ten matches this season and scored the fewest goals — 40.

Barton, who joined the Gas in February, is the club’s third manager of the season, with Ben Garner and Paul Tisdale both relieved of their duties.

Since joining Bristol Rovers, Barton has been unable to address the slide in form, winning just three of his 17 matches in charge so far.

Team News:

Neil Critchley could make a few changes to the team, giving some much needed game time to some players.

Last Time We Met:

Bristol Rovers secured the win at the Memorial Stadium back in January in a 2-1 win. Gary Madine gave Blackpool the lead, before a fightback from the hosts ensured they took the three points.

The Key Player: Luke Leahy

28-year-old full-back, Luke Leahy, joined Bristol Rovers from Walsall in 2019. Leahy has ten goals to his name in all competitions this season, including two in the side’s Emirates FA Cup 6-0 thumping over Darlington earlier in the season.

Neil Critchley:

“There’s a lot to think about for this game, after mathematically securing our place in the play-offs in midweek. Our focus is on trying to win the match on Sunday, and it might give us a chance to give one or two players who haven’t played much lately a bit of game time, because in ten days for the semi-finals we’ll have some tough decisions to make. We want to extend our recent run of three wins and three clean sheets to four, and that’s what we’ll be working towards.”
